'I'm Not Flexing.' Pete Davidson Gets Real About Why He Was So Blindsided By People's Obsessions With His Dating Life

As a fan of Pete Davidson, I can’t help but feel frustrated and disappointed by the way his personal life has overshadowed his impressive comedy and acting career. It’s not right that the media and public focus so much on his relationships instead of acknowledging the talent he brings to the table.

Pete Davidson, known for being one of the buzzed-about young comedians, experiences unwanted focus on his personal life instead of his thriving comedy and acting career. With his high-profile relationships with Kim Kardashian and others, media scrutiny frequently overshadows his professional achievements. In a recent interview, Davidson, an SNL graduate, discussed how unexpected this intense interest in his love life has been for him.

Davidson appeared as a guest on “Real Ones,” which is Jon Bernthal’s podcast. Known for its candid conversations with A-list celebrities, the podcast attracted attention when Davidson was featured due to the intense media scrutiny of his personal life that began during his tenure at “Saturday Night Live.” During the interview, Davidson discussed how this public attention affected his image and the way he was perceived by his peers in Hollywood. He expressed particular annoyance since it occurred early in his career before his comedic skills had fully blossomed. In Bernthal’s conversation with him, Davidson shared these insights.

Before my work gained recognition, people knew me mainly from my relationships in my twenties. However, I’ve always been busy working on various things. Yet, I find it rather ordinary.

Throughout my Hollywood journey in my teenage years and twenties, I’ve dated quite a few people, which isn’t unusual for someone going through that transitional phase. But given my public role as a comedian on a popular show, every relationship I have seems to garner extra attention. Frankly, I find it all quite strange, especially since I don’t use social media to share details of my romantic life with the world.

You’ve spent around half your life in the entertainment industry, approximately 14-15 years, appearing on a national TV show and having dated around 10 people over the past 12 years. I don’t find that extraordinary myself, but to some it may seem intriguing, leading to a lot of attention and confusion since I don’t use social media platforms like Instagram to share my personal life.

Ever since I made my entrance into the small screen world, I’ve had the chance to be linked with some truly remarkable and high-profile individuals in Hollywood. It’s an incredible experience that I’m grateful for.

In 2018, Ariana Grande and the actor became a couple and got engaged shortly after. He spoke about their relationship in his comedy special released in 2020, and Grande penned a song with his name in its title. The actor also publicly dated Kim Kardashian, attending the Met Gala with her in 2022 before they split up after nine months. Phoebe Dynevor, Margaret Qualley, Kate Beckinsale, Chase Sui Wonders, and Madelyn Cline have all been reportedly connected to him at various instances.

Davidson’s romantic past is well-known, with many high-profile relationships. However, as the comedian shares, his time at Saturday Night Live (SNL) has led him to meet such individuals naturally. He put it this way:

The individuals I’ve dated were all met through work. There was no involvement with anyone’s direct messages or vice versa. I was employed at one of Hollywood’s major hubs for meeting new people. My social circle primarily consisted of the people I worked with, explaining how these relationships came about.

It’s understandable that this happens, given that SNL is known for its constantly changing roster of famous faces. In fact, numerous SNL cast members and other contributors have found love within the NBC sketch comedy show. For instance, Colin Jost met and married Scarlett Johansson after she joined SNL, while Emma Stone encountered her husband Dave McCary when he worked there as a writer during her hosting stint.

According to Davidson, the discrepancy between public perception and reality is significant when it comes to his persona both professionally and personally. His life outside of work isn’t a spectacle meant for gossip magazines but an organic extension of who he is. The conversation with Jon Bernthal reveals Davidson’s thoughts on his comedic career and the reasons behind his increased reluctance to share personal details in public.

As a dedicated gamer and fan of Pete Davidson’s acting skills, I can assure you that he hasn’t been resting on his laurels despite what the magazines may suggest. He’s been putting in the effort and expanding his resume with various projects beyond the limelight of his personal life. If you’re curious about his latest work, be sure to check out his stand-up special, “Turbo Fonzarelli,” which is now available for streaming on Netflix with your subscription.
