As a film enthusiast with a penchant for psychological thrillers and a soft spot for rising stars, I must say that the casting of Austin Butler as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho is undoubtedly exhilarating news. However, being no stranger to the world of streaming platforms and their endless offerings, I can’t help but entertain alternative casting scenarios that would have equally captivated my imagination.
In 2024, Austin Butler, with his performances in “Dune: Part Two” and “The Bikeriders,” has left a lasting impression on the film industry. Given his versatility in portraying both ruthless villains and charismatic characters, it’s not surprising that he’s been chosen to lead Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of “American Psycho.” Though I’m thrilled about this casting, I had hoped two other actors might also be under consideration.
According to Variety’s report, it was confirmed that Butler got the role, and another actor, the charismatic Jacob Elordi from “Euphoria,” was rumored to be competing for the part. It’s intriguing that Elordi was mentioned in the same context as Mr. Butler.
The fact that Elordi has been cast as Frankenstein’s Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Netflix production of Frankenstein suggests to me that the young Australian actor is not shy about tackling challenging roles. Additionally, if the Mary Harron adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial best seller serves as a guide, there appears to be plenty of graphic violence and nudity to explore.
Another actor that I feel would be equipped for American Psycho’s unique challenges is actually a vet of the Luca Guadagnino School of Psychosexual Fun and Games: Mike Faist. Through his role in the 2025 Golden Globe nominated picture Challengers, Faist is already an accomplished partner that has worked with the Queer director who’ll be re-adapting the original text into a fresh take.
Additionally, a cast member from “West Side Story” holds a similar versatile position as Austin Butler does. He manages to portray both wild and street-smart characters, yet maintains an air of sophistication and aloofness. I firmly believe he would make an exceptional choice for the role. However, it’s worth noting that my recent impressions might be influenced by “Challengers”.
Indeed, Austin Butler is the chosen actor who will don Oliver Peoples glasses, adorn a David Onica artwork on his wall, and book a table at Dorsia – if he manages to secure one. Although I had my own ideas about other potential cast members, I must admit that I’m genuinely thrilled to witness Butler bringing some metaphorical VHS tapes back.
In other words, given that Mr. Butler is being considered for both the Tom Holland race car movie and rumored to play young Chris Shiherlis in Heat 2, it’s possible that he might need to be replaced if either project takes precedence over the other.
Absolutely, should you wish to compare your preferences with my suggestions, feel free to do so by considering two films from the list, as they are accessible through an Amazon Prime Video subscription. For those who are fond of Austin Butler, the film “The Bikeriders” is up for viewing, while Mike Faist enthusiasts can enjoy him in the movie “Challengers,” both streaming on the same platform.
