In a Patriotic New Memoir, Wilmer Valderrama Extols the Possibilities of the American Dream

As Wilmer Valderrama, I have always been proud of my immigrant roots and the sacrifices my parents made for me. It’s understandable that people want to delve into other aspects of my life, but my book is about sharing the incredible journey my family and I have taken, and the gratitude I feel towards America for giving us a future we might not have had in our native country.

In “An American Story: Everyone’s Invited” (published Sept. 17 by Harper Select), Wilmer Valderrama narrates his journey from being a Venezuelan immigrant who barely spoke English when he was enrolled at Mulholland Middle School in Van Nuys, California; to becoming the charming character Fez on “That ’70s Show”; and eventually, to establishing himself as a versatile figure in Hollywood at 44. For Valderrama, who has been playing Special Agent Nick Torres on CBS’ popular series “NCIS” since 2016, this book serves as a heartfelt tribute to the boundless potential of the American dream.

This book isn’t a juicy expose, but rather focuses on different aspects. Topics such as past relationships with celebrities like Demi Lovato (whose song “29” is said to be about their 12-year age difference) and Mandy Moore (who Valderrama mentioned he had intimate relations with in a notorious 2006 interview with Howard Stern), are not discussed. Additionally, the trial and sentencing of his former co-star Danny Masterson for rape charges, which occurred last September, is also left out. Instead, the author has been living as a family man for the past four years. He tied the knot with model Amanda Pacheco in January 2020, and they welcomed a child the following year.

Valderrama momentarily paused from his packed NCIS filming timetable to respond to queries from The Hollywood Reporter regarding the forthcoming presidential election, an aspect where immigration plays a significant role; his opinions on Masterson’s verdict; and his long-cherished ambition of resurrecting Zorro for screen presentation.

Let’s start with your work with immigrants and all the charitable things you’ve done for people that come to this country, fleeing dangerous places or simply to find a better life. And too often they arrive and are pushed down by those already higher up on the ladder. You went through that yourself. We are about to elect another president. We’ve seen examples of what both candidates will do in the White House when it comes to those issues. I’m wondering where you stand on the current election?

As a passionate supporter, I can’t help but express my gratitude for your inquiry! This memoir was deeply rooted in showcasing the human side of immigration, a topic that often gets oversimplified during elections. It’s crucial to remind everyone that immigrants are an integral part of our society, serving as police officers, lawyers, nurses, doctors, and essential workers. Their contributions to this nation are priceless and should never be overlooked. In the heat of discussions and debates, especially when they make headlines, let’s not forget their humanity. We proudly identify ourselves as “the 200 percent” – a blend of 100 percent American and 100 percent Latino. This moment presents an opportunity for unity and togetherness like never before.

In the book, there’s no reference made to your political views. However, you do share your experiences of meeting Barack Obama and express excitement, as well as discussing being troubled by events in 2016. What’s interesting is that you never directly mention Donald Trump. Given your prominence on the widely-watched show NCIS, which has a diverse audience across political lines, it could be that you aim to avoid polarizing opinions, especially since there are numerous points you might find to criticize regarding Trump’s views on immigrants.

VALDERRAMA Essentially, what he said is quite clear. When I began working with Voto Latino 20 years ago, our aim was to stir up interest within the Latino community. My primary concern then was to encourage Latinos to complete the census and ensure we were accurately counted. If everyone who is eligible to vote actually did so, imagine the impact! Sometimes, politics can turn into arguments, which takes away from the human aspect of discussion. What I truly wanted was to energize my community to vote for what they believe in and what they envision as their future. I’m not here to tell people who to vote for; you and I both know my preference, but it’s crucial for me to convey that this election is also for our culture.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase the sentence like this: “I once found myself in a harrowing ordeal, a near-fatal charter plane crash on my return trip from the Super Bowl. Accompanying me were Colin Hanks, Ashton Kutcher, and Danny Masterson. The plane was shaking violently, and we could feel the carbon monoxide filling the cabin. Masterson expressed his concern as he couldn’t feel his limbs anymore. In that dire situation, I shared an oxygen mask with Kutcher. Reflecting on that flight, I can tell you how it left an indelible mark on my life.

THOUGHTFULLY My initial concern was for my sisters, mother, and father. If I were to depart from this world, would they have all the necessities? This thought provokes reflection on our deepest fears; death is one, but the idea of leaving your loved ones without everything they require is truly terrifying. Consequently, I decided to put in immense effort. I ventured into entrepreneurship and established numerous businesses, continually striving to work hard. It serves as a powerful demonstration of the opportunities this country offers.

As a concerned observer, I can’t help but feel disappointed as I watch events unfold in Venezuela, with opposition leader Edmundo Gonzales choosing to seek refuge in Spain. This situation serves as a stark warning about the potential outcomes of the upcoming U.S. elections, highlighting the importance of making informed decisions.

VALDERRAMA Every election in Venezuela brings a fleeting moment that hints at potential change, only for it to be quickly dashed. It’s incredibly disheartening, especially since I have family there. Many are struggling to make even a few dollars each month. As the world’s largest oil producer, Venezuela could have been a thriving metropolis like Dubai. The sight of a nation shackled without freedom is truly heart-wrenching.

“Since I’ve made a name for myself as a prominent Venezuelan abroad, do fellow countrymen often reach out to me, hoping perhaps that I might return and offer some assistance? Is it possible that they’re appealing to me with something like, ‘Wilmer, could you come back and help us?'”

VALDERRAMA As Venezuelans living abroad with a platform, I believe our primary role is to magnify the truth about the situation back home. Oh, how I wish I could be there, joining my compatriots I grew up with in the streets. The biggest challenge lies in finding a way for us to connect and share what’s happening. Unfortunately, so much information is being suppressed. I strive to ensure that the world remains aware of the reality, as I frequently receive messages from fellow Venezuelans pleading, “Please make sure the world knows.” That’s what we aim to do.

I’m curious to know your thoughts on the situation surrounding your That ’70s Show co-star, Danny Masterson, who was convicted of rape. There was criticism directed at Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, fellow cast members, for submitting letters in support of Danny during the trial. Can you share your feelings about their actions?

Of course, I can see why you’re curious, but allow me to focus on the book that I’ve been eagerly anticipating for people to read. It’s a deeply personal project for me, chronicling my family history, my journey as an immigrant, and the sacrifices made by my parents.

Did Scientology ever court you?

VALDERRAMA Once more, let’s delve into the topic of my parents and their sacrifices. I don’t intend to offer any additional insights on this matter.

Regarding your private life, it seemed that you were involved with several prominent celebrities, yet these connections weren’t mentioned in your book. Can you explain why you chose not to discuss them?

VALDERRAMA Initially, I didn’t intend to write a memoir. Instead, the purpose of my book was to focus on service and giving back. Over many years, I accompanied the USO, starting from my mid-twenties. Essentially, it’s a heartfelt expression of gratitude towards America for providing me with opportunities that might have been unattainable in my home country.

In the news, I noticed announcements about the upcoming Season 22 of NCIS. You hinted at something that has left fans feeling uneasy. Could you clarify what you hinted at and why they’re concerned?

Wilford Valderrama believes that the fans of NCIS are incredibly passionate and always concerned about the show’s progress. In season 22, he thinks that the writers have made priceless contributions to the series. The characters will undergo more personal development this season, making it more humorous and emotionally charged for our main characters. There may also be a chance that they find themselves in grave danger.

So you’re not going anywhere.

VALDERRAMA Yeah, no. I’m OK. I’m in the season.

At last, I’ll share an instance from the story that involves a high-stakes business lunch with Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. In this intriguing encounter, I managed to persuade her to consider Disney reacquiring the rights to Zorro, positioning myself as the lead character in this potential new venture.

PARAPHRASED VERSION During the early 1960s, there was a disagreement over rights between ABC and Walt Disney (who were independent entities at that time) regarding Zorro. Eventually, the rights returned to the creators of the Zorro books. When I spoke with Disney, they were incredibly encouraging. After six decades, we managed to regain the rights for Disney and are now creating a new legacy for the characters. The project is currently in development.

I do love Zorro, I must say.

Absolutely, I agree. It’s interesting to know that Batman was inspired by Zorro, as created by Bob Kane. Bruce Wayne, who later became Batman, witnessed his parents’ murder while leaving a movie theater, and the film they had just watched was none other than The Mask of Zorro.

We need the gritty, Christopher Nolan version of Zorro.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated at the prospect! However, unlike the original Zorro portrayed by Guy Williams, our interpretation will strive to maintain an air of casual grace. We’re determined to preserve that unique blend of humor as well, ensuring that it remains a defining characteristic.
