In Closing Argument, Prosecutors in Diddy Trial Meticulously Lay Out Case for Guilty Verdict

Following a six-week trial where they called witnesses and presented evidence against music and fashion icon Sean “Diddy” Combs at a court in lower Manhattan, a team of six female federal prosecutors argued to the jury that it was clear beyond any reasonable doubt that he headed up a criminal organization.

Facing five charges, including one for racketeering conspiracy, two for sex trafficking through force, fraud or coercion, and two for transporting an individual for prostitution, Combs entered a plea of not guilty following his September arrest. He maintains that he has not been involved in any of the crimes he is accused of.

On a Thursday morning, Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik delivered the government’s final arguments, initially addressing the racketeering conspiracy charge against Combs, followed by discussions on the sex trafficking allegations, particularly involving his two former girlfriends, Cassandra “Cassie” Ventura and a woman identified as “Jane.

In regards to the racketeering allegation, Slavik explained to the jury that it’s crucial for them to come to a unanimous decision that Combs knowingly and intentionally participated or conspired with someone else in committing two acts of racketeering. Slavik presented evidence showing numerous actions by Combs and his group, including drug dealing, kidnapping, arson, bribery, facilitating sex trafficking, arranging travel for commercial sex (referred to as “Jane” and several male sex workers), forced labor, and hiding crimes. He then detailed how each of these incidents allegedly transpired based on the testimony provided.

Regarding the drug charges, Slavik informed the jury that it needs to be demonstrated beyond doubt that a co-conspirator intentionally supplied illegal substances. As per his testimony, when drugs (such as meth, cocaine, ecstasy, and others) were handed over by his staff, they were given to Cassie and Jane, according to Slavik. This, he stated, is nothing but drug distribution in essence.

The kidnapping accusations stem from Capricorn Clark’s testimony that Combs approached her late at night, held her up at gunpoint, and forced her into a car. They then allegedly drove to the Hollywood Hills home of rapper Kid Cudi, where Combs and an associate are said to have broken in. Echoing previous threats made by Combs, Kid Cudi’s Porsche was attacked with a Molotov cocktail, which forms the basis of the arson attack charge.

Indeed, the accusation is that the defendant was involved, but let me clarify: we’re not implying that the defendant physically sliced the damage into Kid Cudi’s Porsche. The point being, as you heard in the audio recordings, the defendant didn’t even purchase their own soup, which hints at a lack of resources to execute such an act.

In this trial, a video showing Diddy (Combs) assaulting Cassie Ventura in an elevator lobby at the InterContinental Hotel in 2016 was repeatedly presented as evidence to the jury. This footage has played a crucial role in the case against him, tarnishing his public image when it was leaked to CNN last year. Previously, he had acknowledged and apologized for the incident, but this video has remained central nonetheless.

Slavik stated that the defendant was aware of his actions and understood the possible outcomes. Specifically, he recognized that if the authorities became aware of what he had done to Cassie at the hotel, he could be taken into custody.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.

Kristina Khorram, who used to be Combs’ chief of staff, and D-Roc, his then-lead security officer, are said to have orchestrated an attempt to acquire a security video. Eventually, Khorram managed to locate the footage from the hotel’s surveillance system and spoke with employees about purchasing the sole copy. They succeeded in doing so, together, for $100,000, which was handed over in cash to a staff member and later divided among three individuals working at the hotel. The appointment of Khorram and D-Roc serves as a clear illustration of how Combs ran his team, with prosecutors claiming it functioned as a “criminal enterprise.” Slavik noted that Combs instructed the staffer receiving the cash not to make any significant purchases using it.

In my perspective, this pivotal instance clearly reveals the motive behind the defendant’s bribe payment. Ponder over why the defendant made that statement. [This incident highlights] the defendant’s violent altercation with Cassie during a heated argument, and members of the Combs’ enterprise going to extreme lengths to prevent this video from reaching law enforcement authorities.

More to come.
