At the beginning of his talk at the Conecta Fiction & Entertainment event in Cuenca, Spain, Jose Maria Caro, Director of Max Local Original Production at Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), Spain, tackled the obvious topic: WBD’s decision to revert back to the HBO Max brand for their streaming service.
He addressed his industry audience and explained, “There seems to be a lot of curiosity about recent developments. Here’s what I can share: Our service is now called HBO Max, as you can see from this advertisement slide with the new slogan ‘Max becomes HBO Max.’
The leading executive made it clear that HBO holds significant worth, not just financially, but also in terms of its content. He stressed that it brings a lot of value to the table. Moreover, he pointed out that HBO symbolizes the company’s central “editorial direction” and key themes when deciding on original productions. He mentioned that creators form the foundation for any project, stating that an ideal creator is someone with immense drive who can significantly impact the market.
For his team, creating unique and captivating characters is equally important, as he noted. “Additionally, we’re on the hunt for fresh character concepts,” the executive added.
Emphasizing that HBO Max focuses more on quality than quantity when it comes to original content, Caro further underscored WarnerMedia’s dedication to producing local originals. “Without locally-produced shows,” he stated, “we cannot connect with our local audience.” If these productions happen to resonate with a global audience as well, that’s an added benefit, he noted.
Initially, the WBD streaming service debuted as HBO Max in 2020. However, in 2023, the company stirred up some controversy when it decided to drop the well-known network brand name and simply call the service Max. But, just before the company’s mid-May presentation at Madison Square Garden in New York, WBD president and CEO David Zaslav announced that the name would be reverted back to HBO Max.
