In ‘The Devil Smokes,’ the Line Between Reality and “Something Darker” Is Blurring (Exclusive Trailer)

The eerie title and summary of Mexican filmmaker Ernesto Martínez Bucio’s first full-length directorial effort, The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box), or El Diablo Fuma (y guarda las cabezas de los cerillos quemados en la misma caja), will make its global debut in the fresh Perspectives segment of the 75th Berlin Film Festival on Saturday.

The movie, which transports us back to the enchanting realm of our youthful years, takes place in Mexico City during the mid-1990s and explores sibling bonds while depicting the fear that is often inherited from one generation to another. This film carries a “supernatural” label on its Berlin festival listing.

Following the unexpected vanishing of their parents, the five siblings are now under the guardianship of their grandmother. A summary goes: They’re fighting for survival, but as time passes, the boundary between what’s real and something sinister starts to fade.

If you’re not troubled by it, the trailer might make you feel differently. It reveals one child who doesn’t bury her head in the sand, and trust me, it’s a surprising scene!

The film was jointly penned by the director and Mariapau Karen Plata, boasting a star-studded cast that includes Bravo Aviña, Rafael Nieto Martínez, Regina Alejandra, Donovan Said, and Laura Uribe Rojas.

The director’s short movies have been showcased at prestigious film festivals such as Cannes, San Sebastian, and Rotterdam. Additionally, he was part of the Berlinale Talents program back in 2016.
