Over time, Paul W.S. Anderson has directed numerous adaptations, ranging from popular video game series to novels like the most recent one. Together with his wife Milla Jovovich, this filmmaker has created intriguing films characterized by distinct styles and action sequences that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Their latest production, In the Lost Lands, is an adaptation of a short story penned by George R.R. Martin, the author of ‘Game of Thrones’. The movie, starring Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich, hit theaters in early March 2025 but failed to impress at the box office with a total of $4.7 million worldwide against a budget of $55 million. Now, it’s expected that In the Lost Lands will be available for video on demand (VOD) soon.
On April 8, 2025, the movie titled “In the Lost Lands” is set to debut on digital platforms for both rental and purchase. Although it didn’t perform well at the box office earlier this year, there’s a possibility that with Dave Bautista leading the dystopian film, it may discover an audience in the VOD (Video On Demand) market. As more streaming titles gain popularity even with limited theater runs, the length of time movies stay in theaters is gradually diminishing.
On the other hand, prolonging a film’s run at cinemas was a significant topic during CinemaCon, potentially benefiting films such as “In the Lost Lands“. Yet, Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation faced challenges in garnering audience interest, despite boasting some talented actors on screen.
‘In the Lost Lands’ Has a Chance to Find a Second Life on Digital
Set within the Forgotten Realms, the story revolves around Boyce (Bautista), a solitary gunfighter concealing a mysterious past, who journeys through a post-apocalyptic world alongside Gray Alys (Jovovich), a powerful Witch on a hunt for a werewolf. Avoiding the wrath of a vicious church and its tenacious followers, the duo find themselves in a struggle that combines elements of the Wild West and post-apocalyptic action. Remarkably, this film could succeed in the digital VOD market despite not receiving the theater exposure it warranted. Interestingly, this production would stand out from Anderson’s previous works.
The movie director, famed for transforming the Resident Evil video games into a successful action series, has consistently seen box office success throughout his career. In 2016, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter marked his last installment in the franchise and raked in $312 million globally on a budget of $40 million, making it the highest-grossing film in the series. Yet, since The Lost Lands (released before 2020) and Monster Hunter (his more recent work), his films have not generated as much profit in theaters.
On April 8th, “In The Lost Lands” is set to debut on Video-On-Demand platforms simultaneously with Bong Joon Ho’s latest movie, “Mickey 17.” Both films have faced their own box office challenges. It will be intriguing to compare the two as they make their debut on a new platform. Currently, there’s no word yet on Anderson’s next project, but fans can look forward to purchasing his upcoming film digitally soon.
