As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has piqued my interest. The action-packed gameplay, global adventures, and a chance to punch some Nazis sound like a dream come true. However, as someone who’s been through more VR experiences than most, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment that this game isn’t available in VR.
Indy Jones is all set to take up his bullwhip once more! That’s because Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be launching on Xbox on December 9, with a PS5 release scheduled for early 2025. If you’re familiar with MachineGames and their Wolfenstein series, you can expect this adventure to be filled with thrilling action.
Over time, many Indiana Jones games have been released, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle seems to be pushing boundaries even further by aiming to create a genuinely next-gen adventure that takes us on a worldwide journey. The gameplay suggests we’ll have close encounters with Nazis, which some might view as a squandered chance.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle fans think it should be a VR game
Many players have expressed their disappointment that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle isn’t compatible with virtual reality (VR), given that large portions of the game are presented in a first-person perspective. Ever since the debut of gameplay footage during Developer Direct in January, there has been an outcry for a VR adaptation. Some enthusiasts have even created their own VR versions of the trailer to demonstrate how feasible it could be.
Across various social media platforms, gamers have been expressing disappointment that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle hasn’t been recognized as a suitable candidate for a VR game, particularly given the possibilities of PSVR2. One user commented, “The Indiana Jones game appears to be designed more for VR than for AAA PC games,” while another agreed, “That Indiana Jones game seems like it would make an exceptional VR game.”
Some people are expressing that they hope for a future VR modification, while others are criticizing it as having the appearance of a VR mod without intended functionality. One person even commented, “I don’t understand why this looks like VR and Wolfenstein doesn’t,” to which another responded, “The first-person view gives it the feel of a VR experience, but not in an appealing manner.”
As a gamer, I’ve noticed an increase in Virtual Reality (VR) adaptations of first-person games, and Capcom seems to have set the bar high with Resident Evil 7, Village, and even last year’s RE4 Remake. Unfortunately, MachineGames hasn’t given us any hints about Indiana Jones getting a VR upgrade, so it seems like he’ll continue his adventures in the standard game format for now.
2019 saw Arkane Lyon and MachineGames collaborate on Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, a VR spin-off from the main series. Although it didn’t reach the quality of traditional Wolfenstein games, it indicates that Bethesda is open to such concepts. As for the upcoming Indiana Jones game, which was previously exclusive to Xbox, making its way to PS5, we’re still wrapping our minds around that development. The notion of a VR port for this game remains a mythical idea at present.
