As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours in the darkened confines of cinemas, I must say that the success of Inside Out 2 has been a delight to behold. The sequel has not only captured the hearts of audiences worldwide but has also resonated deeply with me due to its exploration of complex emotions, particularly anxiety.
The second installment of Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out,” titled “Inside Out 2,” has been a blockbuster hit since its release and is currently the top-grossing film of the year. Fans are eagerly speculating if a third movie might be in the works, and actress Kensington Tallman, who voices Riley in the series, spoke about the emotional depths of the film as well as her hopes for future storylines. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Tallman shared her aspirations for Riley’s journey in potential sequels, expressing a desire to explore themes of love and college life.
“Perhaps it’s love, as it seems to encompass numerous facets, and I’m quite curious to witness the manifestation of love in Riley’s life.”
She expressed, “Indeed, she’s in her college years approaching adulthood, which can be both thrilling and terrifying at times. It’d be fascinating to delve into the balance of these emotions, such as excitement, fear, and anxiety. Although I’m not there just yet, being 16, I’m almost there. It seems like an intriguing narrative to develop. Rest assured, I’ll reach that stage before long.”
In the continuation of our discussion, Tallman shared an insightful point about voicing Riley in ‘Inside Out 2’. She confessed that portraying anxiety-ridden scenes was particularly challenging for her due to personal connections with feelings of anxiety. This process, she admitted, offered a profound learning experience as it mirrored aspects of her own life. Despite finding the scene tough to create, she appreciated its sensitive handling and believed it conveyed the empowering message that “it’s alright not to always be okay.”
Reflecting on my personal journey, I’ve come to realize that what truly stands out is the lesson it imparts – anxiety is a common human experience, and it’s completely normal not to always feel okay. However, an eye-opening moment for me came when I recorded an anxiety attack and heard myself saying, ‘I’m not good enough.’ That simple statement served as a mirror, revealing how often I put myself down and undervalue my worth. This experience has left an indelible mark on me, encouraging self-compassion and fostering growth in my self-perception.
It showed me that it’s okay to have those moments… Also, they don’t last forever. Panic attacks are just a small sliver of our time. Everything is temporary. It’ll go away.”
What Does the Future Hold for Riley and Her Emotions?
At D23 Expo, Pixar’s CEO Peter Docter revealed plans for a spinoff titled “Dream Productions,” which delves deeper into Riley’s mind following the events of “Inside Out.” Scheduled for release in 2025, this series serves as an “in-betweenquel” that bridges the gap between the original and potential sequel. The focus is on Riley’s dreams, highlighting the creativity and tumultuous nature that defines them. Additionally, Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed enthusiasm for a second sequel, indicating we may see more of Joy, Sadness, Anxiety, and their emotion counterparts in the future.
Originally released in 2015 to both critical praise and financial success, “Inside Out” captivated audiences with its unique tale about young Riley and her journey through various emotions like Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear following a move to a new city. Fast forward to this year, the sequel, “Inside Out 2,” has been another triumph for Disney, being crowned the highest-grossing film of 2021. Riley’s story continues, as she encounters new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, while dealing with the challenges of puberty and growing into a teenager. Remarkably, “Inside Out 2” has now entered the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, surpassing the earnings of “The Avengers” (2012).
