As a long-time movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away and Pixar’s enchanting worlds, I must say that this year has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for me. The duel between Jon Watts’ “Goonies in space” take on Star Wars, titled Skeleton Crew, and Dream Productions‘ spinoff from Inside Out, has left me utterly captivated.
One of the year’s most unexpectedly popular TV shows has been the “Star Wars” series, which surprisingly, many people enjoy. However, its dominance on Disney+’s global chart isn’t coming without a fight, as the Pixar series, which is a spinoff from a well-known franchise and titled “[Insert Title Here]”, poses a significant challenge to dethrone Jude Law’s “Star Wars” debut.
On Disney+, Bluey’s TV reign has frequently been challenged but consistently held strong. However, a string of fresh shows seems to have momentarily dethroned our little canine friend. Interestingly, this doesn’t often happen when neither contender is a series from Joe Brumm’s animation studio. At present, we find ourselves in such an unusual situation as two shows are fiercely competing for the top spot, and Jon Watts’ Star Wars production is being put to the ultimate test.
In a change from Spider-Man to Star Wars, Watts’ interpretation, dubbed “The Goonies in space” within the Star Wars universe, has successfully steered clear of the common traps that have sunk shows like The Acolyte and Ahsoka. It’s been winning over both critics and viewers with its charming blend of the Star Wars milieu and an 80s Amblin-esque adventure feel. At present, Skeleton Crew boasts a 95% Tomatometer score and an impressive 80% Popcornmeter rating (keep in mind, this is Star Wars… anything above 60% is quite remarkable nowadays).
As a devoted viewer, I’m captivated by this space odyssey chronicling a band of youthful misfits adrift in the cosmos, yearning to return home with the guidance of Law’s Jod Na Nawood. This journey thrusts them into peril and encounters with bizarre extraterrestrials, but it offers a refreshing twist, steering clear of high-flying space combat or dazzling lightsaber duels – for now at least. Whether this novelty persists throughout the season remains to be seen.
Dream Productions is Building on ‘Inside Out 2’s Success
Despite the widespread acclaim and audience appeal of the series “Skeleton Crew,” its dominance on Disney+ is currently being challenged by the simultaneous release of Pixar’s “Dream Productions.” In essence, this presents a significant hurdle, or to put it more vividly, causes quite a stir. This series delves once more into the thoughts of Riley, the protagonist from “Inside Out,” and is situated between the occurrences of the two films. In this iteration, the spotlight shifts to Paula Persimmon, the dream director from Riley’s inner Dream Productions, who grapples with her own dilemma as she strives to create “the next sensational tween sensation.
Despite receiving a 71% approval rating from critics, who view it as another Disney money-making venture, audiences are loving the four-episode miniseries from Dream Productions, giving it a perfect 100% on the Popcornmeter. Some viewers have pondered why a miniseries format was chosen over a feature-length film for the 82-minute runtime, but this seems insignificant to fans who are primarily concerned that the series could have been extended for their enjoyment.
It’s quite possible that Dream Productions could momentarily outshine Skeleton Crew ahead of the premiere of the latest Lucasfilm series on Disney+. Given the popularity of Star Wars, it’s safe to say that any Star Wars show might claim the top spot on the day of a new episode release. After all, when it comes to shows that people genuinely enjoy, the possibilities are endless and even extend beyond the sky!
