People who’ve watched several excellent films starring Timothée Chalamet might acknowledge his remarkable versatility as an actor. However, I was a bit taken aback by a recent role he proposed for himself. When asked if he could tackle another biopic after portraying Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown”, Chalamet expressed interest in playing Ernie Johnson in a potential “Inside the NBA” production. The hosts of this long-standing TNT show have since responded to the actor’s statement, and Charles Barkley’s reaction has left me chuckling.
I have to admit that when I heard the Call Me by Your Name star was open to portraying “EJ” in some capacity, I was somewhat thrown off. However, now I can’t stop thinking about the possibility as both a fan of the sports talk show and the 29-year-old actor. As it so happens, I’m not the only one who’s enthusiastic about the prospect of such a production as well. Ernie Johnson reacted to the idea enthusiastically while discussing it on a recent episode of Inside, of which a clip was shared on Instagram:
I’m astonished by what Timothée Chalamet said, yet it transformed me into a champion in the eyes of my children and grandchildren. … Timothée, could you please reach out? Let’s connect, let’s converse.
Interestingly, Cheryl Johnson, Ernie’s wife, too posted a humorous video. In it, she joked that after listening to the comments, her husband proposed they go watch the movie ‘A Complete Unknown‘ to see if the actor from ‘Interstellar‘ could play him convincingly. Even though Ernie Johnson admitted he was keen on watching the film due to his fondness for Bob Dylan, he still praised the lead actor’s performance. Frankly, I find it endearing that Johnson is so eager about this.
Charles Barkley, known for his witty remarks, appeared unimpressed, albeit humorously so, in this recent scenario. Amidst his ongoing banter with JJ Redick, he found the whole event somewhat bothersome. Simultaneously, he drew a parallel to a similar incident last year involving co-host Kenny Smith and a cast member from “Little Women,” expressing similar sentiments of annoyance.
Let me make this clear now… It seems things can’t possibly get any worse, right? Well, I thought my life had hit rock bottom last year when Timothée Chalamet admitted he took fashion inspiration from Kenny. But this new development? This feels like the final nail in the coffin…

It’s no surprise to me that such a response would come from the individual who earlier made bold statements regarding “Inside the NBA” amidst its cancellation debate. I must admit, Sir Charles’ straightforward (and blunt) style is something I admire. His opinions don’t change my belief that an Inside the NBA biopic featuring Mr. Chalamet wouldn’t be uninteresting. Given his exceptional portrayal of Bob Dylan, receiving critical acclaim for his “playfully off-balance” performance, and more recently filming the sports biopic “Marty Supreme” with A24, where he plays the leading role, it seems that such a project could indeed be promising.
Currently, it appears unlikely that an “Inside” biopic will materialize, but if you’re hoping for one, keep your hopes high. I have no doubt that the actor from Lady Bird could convincingly portray Ernie Johnson. All I can think about now is who might play the rest of the team and how Charles Barkley would respond to someone suggesting they play him in such a film.
In the meantime, when you find yourself with some free time, consider visiting your neighborhood movie theater to catch Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown”.
