Instagram Tests New Vertical Profile Grid

As a seasoned gamer of Instagram, hailing from the golden era of square grids, I must confess my initial skepticism upon hearing about the platform’s new rectangular profile grid experiment. Having spent countless hours meticulously crafting the perfect square composition, I found myself reminiscing on the good old days when every image had equal weight and importance in the feed.

Instagram is experimenting with a fresh take on its traditional profile layout, swapping the standard square grid for a more elongated rectangular one. The head honcho at Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced on his own Instagram story that this revamped layout is being piloted among a select group of users.

Mosseri clarified the decision behind the change, stating that squares were originally used on Instagram because you could only post square photos back then. However, most content uploaded today on Instagram is vertical, either 4:3 for photos or 9:16 for videos, so reducing it to a square can be quite harsh.

The video/reels tab on user profiles is now in a vertical format, making vertical photos similar in appearance. A test account has shown that photos posted to Threads align closely with the vertical video layout. Instagram has been developing this update since 2022 and is gradually releasing it to more users.

The success or failure of this latest update depends on user reactions, as stated by Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai in an interview with The Verge. Essentially, they’re experimenting with a vertical layout for profile grids among a select group of individuals. Since this is only a trial run, they plan to gather feedback from the community before making any wider releases.
