As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can’t help but draw parallels between these new appointments and the role-playing game we all know and love – life itself!
The International Cinematographers Guild recently appointed two new regional directors, namely Joey Brenner and Anna Nowlan.
On Tuesday, IATSE Local, a union representing approximately 10,000 camera crew members and publicists during collective bargaining, announced the appointment of Brenner as the head for the central region and Nowlan as the leader for the eastern region.
Alex Tonisson, ICG’s national executive director, expressed his excitement in a statement, welcoming Joey and Anna to their new positions. Both of them demonstrate a strong passion for advocating for our members and fostering a robust labor movement within the entertainment industry.
Brenner and Nowlan are set to team up with Michaella “Micki” Bursalyan, who was recently hired as Western Region director, a position she took over from the Service Employees International Union earlier this year. Notably, Nowlan is stepping into the shoes of John Amman, who has just retired after a 33-year tenure with the union. In his final role, Amman served as its Eastern Region director.
Joey Brenner transitions to the cinematographers’ union from SEIU-Florida Public Services Union based in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he held the position of Organizing and Bargaining Director, supervising staff and handling contract negotiations. With more than ten years of experience in organized labor, as confirmed by the union, his extensive background in labor activism has us thrilled about the talents, insights, and knowledge he will contribute to our organization. As expressed by 1st national vice president Deborah Lipman in a statement, “Given his deep-rooted history in the labor movement, we’re eager for the abilities, knowledge, and know-how Joey will bring to our team.
Anna Nowlan, who hails from a family of labor leaders (specifically with UNITE HERE), has been promoted from her position as the assistant Eastern Region director for the union she currently serves. Prior to joining the International Cinematographers Guild in 2019, Anna gained experience as a community organizer and campaign worker during Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012. In a statement, national vice president Chris Silano acknowledged her dedication to the union, stating, “Over the years, Anna has relentlessly advocated for our Eastern Region members and the union as a whole. I am delighted to congratulate her on this new role within our community.
Established through the amalgamation of three distinct IATSE Locals back in 1996, the International Cinematographers Guild now stands as IATSE’s largest Local. It is responsible for negotiating and enforcing contracts for the camera department, including cinematographers, camera operators, loaders, digital imaging technicians, and a select group of publicists.
