Interview: Paula Bentancur tells us why we should be excited for Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance

As a passionate fan of tower defense games, I was thrilled to attend Gamescom Latam and get a sneak peek at Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance. The game is a testament to Ironhide Studios’ commitment to delivering high-quality, premium experiences that are both accessible and deep. During my brief playtime, I was captivated by the engaging storyline and the strategic depth of the gameplay.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance is almost here! This highly-anticipated tower defense game is set to deliver another exceptional experience on mobile devices. During my brief 15-minute sneak peek at Gamescom Latam last month, I was completely immersed, despite my questionable micromanagement abilities. The game started off pleasantly relaxing, but as the final enemy waves approached my towers, it transformed into an exhilarating rollercoaster ride of intensity and excitement!

Our formal assessment isn’t yet ready, but you can check out my conversation with Paula Bentancur from the event instead. We discussed Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance as well as Ironhide Studios’ future plans following launch.

Could you please introduce yourself and your role in Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance?

My name is Paula Bentancur, I am the Head of Marketing at Ironhide Game Studio.

What’s new in Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance?

As an avid fan, I’m thrilled about the fresh start Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance brings to the tale. Picking up from where Kingdom Rush Vengeance left off, this installment bridges the gap to Legends of Kingdom Rush on Apple Arcade. In this new chapter, eternal enemies Vez’nan and the Linirea army team up to confront an even bigger menace.

If anyone hasn’t played a Kingdom Rush game before, would you say this is a good entry point despite being the fifth in the series?

The Kingdom Rush series is user-friendly, allowing novices to easily grasp the fundamentals. As you progress, the challenge level increases. Rest assured, essential storyline aspects won’t be lost if you dive straight into the most recent installment.

If the narrative that runs through all the Kingdom Rush games is something players care about, it might be more enjoyable for them to play in this sequence: Kingdom Rush Origins, then Kingdom Rush, followed by Kingdom Rush Frontiers, and finally Kingdom Rush Vengeance and Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance. Doing so will allow them to follow the story as it progresses. Nevertheless, players are welcome to begin with whichever game grabs their attention first.

What makes Kingdom Rush 5 stand out from other tower defences?

Alliance excels at providing a high-quality gaming experience. We focus on creating an enjoyable and refined gameplay. The game is user-friendly yet challenging to master. Additionally, its captivating art style adds to its appeal, offering more than just strategic depth.

You decided to make the game premium. Why is this the approach you took rather than going free-to-play like so many other entries in the genre?

At Ironhide Game Studio, we’re recognized for developing top-tier games. Although the premium game model faces decreasing popularity on mobile devices, we continue to produce such content for our dedicated fanbase while also investigating alternative approaches.

What are your favourite towers, heroes and abilities to use?

In my preference for hero characters, I’m drawn to those with quick actions and strong abilities such as Nyru and Kosmyr. These heroes offer an engaging experience through strategic control, enabling me to significantly impact the progression of battles. Regarding towers, I appreciate a varied selection that caters to different enemy classes and roles.

A traditional Necromancer consistently summons entities, making it an effective choice. The Elven Stargazer performs optimally when situated close to Paladins. Ballista Outposts inflict substantial damage on individual targets. To add, an Arcane Wizard contributes significant magic damage to the team. This combination ensures a versatile strategy for managing diverse enemy groups.

Are there any plans for the game post-launch that you can share with us?

Based on my experience as a project manager overseeing software development, I can tell you that our team is actively working on creating mini-expansions for our upcoming release. The first one is slated to go live in October. In my career, I’ve learned that post-release content updates are crucial for keeping users engaged and satisfied. That’s why we’re committed to delivering at least two more of these updates following the initial launch. Our team is dedicated to providing a rich and evolving user experience, and these mini-expansions are an essential part of that commitment.

We met during Gamescom Latam, where a big focus was on Brazil – and Latin America generally – becoming a bigger force in gaming. Do you have any thoughts or insights on this?

As a passionate gamer from Latin America, I can’t help but be thrilled about the impact of Gamescom LATAM on our region’s gaming industry. The abundance of creative minds and game developers in Latin America is truly impressive, and this event serves as an excellent platform to showcase their incredible potential.
