In the gripping two-part true crime documentary on Netflix titled “Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter“, the heartrending disappearance of teenager Aundria Bowman is examined, revealing details about her early life and upbringing. In the year 1974, Cathy Terkanian, then aged 16, gave birth to Aundria (formerly known as Alexis Badger) and cared for her for nearly a year before her mother persuaded her to give their daughter up for adoption, as she felt Cathy was too young to be a responsible parent. Although it pained her deeply, Cathy reluctantly agreed to a closed adoption, and the baby found a new home with Dennis and Brenda Bowman, who believed they were making the best decision for their new child.

Cathy had never discovered who adopted her baby and was unaware that the Bowmans concealed sinister and distorted mysteries, making them the least suitable couple to raise an innocent child. She had always pondered about her daughter’s fate and yearned for a reunion, and in April 2010, Cathy was taken aback when the adoption agency shared heart-wrenching news: Aundria had gone missing 21 years earlier in 1989, vanishing mysteriously from the Bowman residence. The girl was only 14 at the time of her disappearance, and Cathy became fiercely determined to uncover the truth.

Heartstricken and exasperated over her daughter Aundria being missing for decades without any trace, Cathy resolved to probe into her disappearance herself and was prepared to put up a strong fight in her pursuit of the truth. When the police discovered a body they suspected to be that of the long-lost girl, Cathy was requested to offer a DNA sample; however, it didn’t match. Unfazed, she teamed up with her partner Ed and began gathering information, reaching out to some of Aundria’s old friends and creating a Facebook page for the search endeavor. Cathy also enlisted the aid of amateur detective Carl Koppelman, intending to make use of every resource available to find her daughter.

Aundria’s friends started contacting Cathy and shared the terrible ordeal Aundria experienced at the hands of Dennis Bowman, her adoptive parents. They reported that he had physically and sexually abused Aundria, and she had sought help from school staff out of fear. Additionally, a woman named Metta McLeod stepped forward when she saw a picture of Aundria with the Bowmans. She told Cathy that she suspected Dennis had attempted to kidnap and harm her as a child, but these claims were never substantiated. It was around this time that the Bowmans mysteriously moved to rural Wisconsin.

As a movie enthusiast immersed in the mystery unfolding around the Bowmans, I’ve decided to delve deeper into their lives, declaring open hostilities against this enigmatic couple. I’ve been pushing the police to concentrate their investigation on Dennis, going as far as crafting a strategic smear campaign targeting the pair in Aundria’s disappearance area. I firmly believe that Dennis played a sinister role in her vanishing, and unfortunately, the chilling truth of that fateful day would leave me emotionally devastated when it was finally revealed.

In 2019, approximately three decades after the vanishing of Aundria, it was Dennis Bowman who was apprehended for raping and taking the life of Kathleen Doyle, a 25-year-old woman in 1980. This occurred during his naval work, when he violently attacked the young lady at her residence. Dennis confessed to first-degree rape, murder, and burglary, receiving two consecutive life sentences for this horrific act. However, it’s worth noting that Doyle was not his only victim; after a year in prison, he admitted to Brenda that he was also responsible for the death of Aundria, confessing to second-degree murder.

Dennis confessed to his wife that he had argued with Aundria and she had fled their residence. When he struck her, tragically a 14-year-old girl fell down a flight of stairs and passed away from the fall. He informed Brenda (through Glamour), who was unaware of the girl’s fate, “Aundria is deceased. She was dead all along.” Dennis subsequently admitted to dismembering Aundria’s body and burying it in their backyard garden, and her skeletal remains were unearthed by authorities on the property of the family’s previous residence. He received an extra 35-to 50-year prison term for Aundria’s death, and eventually Cathy learned what had happened to her daughter.

Regardless of Dennis being imprisoned for life and her long-fought struggle for justice for her daughter, Cathy’s fight against the Bowmans is far from concluded. Now, she finds herself entangled in a heated dispute with Brenda over Aundria’s ashes. At present, Cathy possesses half of her child’s remains, while Brenda has the other half. Cathy intends to initiate a petition to obtain the remaining portion of the remains. Additionally, she is resolute on altering the name on her daughter’s birth certificate, aiming for it to read Alexis Badger instead. Cathy articulated these intentions in the moving Netflix documentary:

I need to remove that monster’s name from my daughter’s birth certificate. It seems like a daunting task dealing with the system, but I’m determined to tackle it. I’ll make sure to bring this issue directly to the governor’s attention. I want his name off the document, after which I plan to adopt her into my name. Then, I believe, I will have navigated through the challenges.
