IPR.VC Film, TV Fund Gets $26M Capital Injection From European Investment Bank

The European Investment Fund (EIF) is pouring €25 million ($26 million) into a Finnish fund that supports movies and TV shows primarily made in Europe. This money will be used in the third alternative investment fund of film and TV investor IPR.VC, IPR.VC Fund III, which has now surpassed €100 million ($105 million) for content production.

Based in Helsinki, with an additional office in London, the investment fund manager IPR.VC specializes in investing in “top-tier film and television productions” since 2015. It has managed to gather €200 million ($210 million) primarily from Nordic professional investors across its three funds, funding over 50 projects spread across Europe and beyond. IPR.VC has supported notable projects like Alex Garland’s “Civil War” and Matt Johnson’s “BlackBerry”.

The European Investment Fund (EIF), a component of the European Investment Bank Group, has made a fresh investment, which falls under an initiative by the European Commission called InvestEU MediaInvest. This instrument is designed to attract private investors and boost total investments in Europe’s audiovisual sector to approximately €400 million ($420 million) between 2022 and 2027.

The financial obligation aims to draw additional investors towards IPR.VC Fund III, ultimately reaching its aim of €120 million ($126 million) by the closing date on March 31. The objective is to stimulate investment in a sector that historically has faced financing challenges in the market, thereby providing institutional investors with opportunities to invest in media content assets through IPR.VC.

The IPR.VC, known as Europe’s leading independent film and television investment fund manager, maintains long-standing partnerships with globally recognized production companies like the independent studio A24, XYZ Films, and European studios such as France’s mk2 Films.

Instead of the old adage of funding ‘passion projects’, this substantial investment by EIF underscores the increasing and lasting importance of high-quality film and television content in Europe and worldwide, as stated by Tanu-Matti Tuominen, co-founder of IPR.VC. This also demonstrates how portfolio diversification can swiftly generate significant returns for an investor’s collection of alternative investments.

Thomas Ostros, vice president of the EIB, expressed our dedication to nurturing innovation and artistic expression in the European audiovisual field by investing in IPR.VC Fund III. This investment empowers European content creators to maintain intellectual property ownership, thereby delivering premium content to worldwide viewers. Consequently, it fortifies Europe’s cultural and creative industries.
