Iran Film, Dakota Johnson, Stellan Skarsgard, Peter Sarsgaard, Vicky Krieps Honors Set for Karlovy Vary

A previously unannounced Iranian movie has been added to the roster for the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), with stars Dakota Johnson, Stellan Skarsgård, Peter Sarsgaard, and Vicky Krieps also joining the cast to maintain the safety of their delegation.

Known for being a frequent stop on the movie festival tour among many celebrities, Karlovy Vary has announced that Michael Douglas will be making an appearance there this year.

The last movie in this year’s Karlovy Vary Crystal Globe main competition lineup is “Bidad” from Iranian director Soheil Beiraghi. This film narrates the story of a young singer named Seti, who challenges the reality that women in Iran are prohibited from public performance. In defiance of her nation’s religious laws, she chooses to sing on the streets. Her performances rapidly garner attention, and Seti becomes a symbol of freedom for a youthful generation tired of being suppressed by the regime.

The movie Bidad was produced independently due to its critical content, which made it difficult for approval from censors. As a result, director Soheil Beiraghi faced investigation during filming. To ensure safety after completion, the announcement of the film’s inclusion in the festival program was delayed until both the director and his crew could travel safely out of Iran. Recently, the team learned with great joy that they were on their way to attend the festival.

With the grand debut of Bidad, everything has fallen into place for our journey to the Czech festival as well.

Actor Stellan Skarsgård, winner of a Golden Globe award, is set to return to Karlovy Vary and receive the Crystal Globe for his significant contributions to world cinema. In addition, he will showcase his latest film titled “Sentimental Value“, directed by Joachim Trier, which recently claimed the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

During the kickoff event for the KVIFF (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival), the KVIFF President’s Award is set to be given to Paula Beer, a multi-talented actress recognized with a European Film Award for best actress in Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” and highly praised by festival organizers. The festival will also screen Anna Cazenave Cambet’s film titled “Love Me Tender,” featuring Paula Beer.

During the opening event, the KVIFF will bestow the President’s Award upon Sarsgaard, who has recently been in Tim Fehlbaum’s film “September 5.” He has also completed filming for Warner Bros.’ upcoming production titled “The Bride!” alongside Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. Directed by his wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie is a reimagining of Frankenstein set in 1930s Chicago and will be released later this year. In recognition of Sarsgaard, the festival will showcase the journalism drama “Shattered Glass” from 2003.

During the opening weekend of KVIFF 2025, specifically on Sunday, July 6th, Dakota Johnson will receive the KVIFF President’s Award and showcase her two most recent movies – “Splitsville” directed by Michael Angelo Covino and “Materialists” by Celine Song. As a continuation of her family’s acting legacy, spanning generations through her grandmother Tippi Hedren, mother Melanie Griffith, and father Don Johnson, who are all acclaimed Hollywood stars, it is fitting that her film debut took place at the age of 10 in the movie “Crazy in Alabama” (1999, directed by Antonio Banderas).

Besides this year’s honorees at Karlovy Vary Festival, several notable figures are anticipated as well. For instance, Camille Cottin, a renowned French actress recognized from shows like “Call My Agent!” and “House of Gucci,” will unveil the world premiere of “Out of Love.” Additionally, Max Walker-Silverman is set to return to Karlovy Vary after three years, presenting the international premiere of his film “Rebuilding” following his debut with “A Love Song” there. Lastly, Jay Duplass, an American actor, will be in attendance for the screening of his comedy “The Baltimorons.

Michel Franco, a Mexican filmmaker, is back at Karlovy Vary after only a year, showcasing his new movie titled “Dreams.” Starring Jessica Chastain, this film made its debut at this year’s Berlinale. Additionally, Mstyslav Chernov, who won both a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar for his work on “20 Days in Mariupol,” will be presenting his latest documentary, titled “2000 Metres to Andriivka.” Lastly, the historical drama “Two Prosecutors,” which premiered in the main competition at Cannes, will be introduced by its director, Sergei Loznitsa.
