As a gamer with a lifelong obsession with all things fantasy, I can hardly contain my excitement over the recent auction of the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones. With every penny spent on this magnificent piece of pop culture history, I can’t help but feel a twinge of regret that my own wallet is nowhere near $1.49 million USD.
The iconic Iron Throne from the popular HBO show “Game of Thrones,” created by George R.R. Martin, was recently sold at an auction conducted by Heritage Auctions for an astounding 1.49 million US dollars.
Standing at a towering seven feet, the authentic traveling Iron Throne, inspired by the fictional lore, is meticulously made with painted plastic and precious gems. This replica was crafted to imitate its origin story, which involves swords melted down using dragon fire. Over the weekend, it became the most expensive item sold, finding a secretive buyer who outbid other popular lots such as Jon Snow’s Longclaw swords, a Westeros Map Room floor, Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon egg, and more.
Ever since we initiated the auction for ‘Game of Thrones’ items back in September, it was evident that this would captivate everyone,” stated Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions. “These are remarkable artifacts crafted by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop makers, who devoted themselves to bringing George R.R. Martin’s brilliant novels to life.
Janet Graham Borba, HBO’s executive vice president of production, expressed her delight about the outcome of the auction featuring renowned ‘Game of Thrones’ memorabilia. She mentioned that the fans remain dedicated collectors, and she appreciates their involvement along with Heritage Auctions in making this event a massive triumph.
