Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of death.
Reminiscing on the indelible cinematic moments created by Bollywood star Irrfan Khan, who tragically passed away five years ago, his dear friend and director Shoojit Sircar commemorated the anniversary with a poignant tribute. Filled with heartfelt anecdotes and snapshots from the filming of Piku, he also disclosed that he has concluded work on their upcoming project alongside Irrfan’s son, Babil Khan.
On Instagram today (April 29), filmmaker Shoojit Sircar posted a heartfelt tribute to his close friend and actor Irrfan Khan. He shared a collection of backstage pictures from the Piku set and reminisced about the actor’s absence. He noted that Irrfan’s spirit continues to live on in memories, discussions, and everyday activities.
In addition to discussing the movie-making process, the filmmaker expressed fond memories of their casual hangouts, which included eating jhal muri, deep conversations, and unexpected bouts of laughter. Shoojit revealed that he maintains a close bond with Irrfan’s family, particularly his son Babil Khan, who has grown to be more like a young friend to him.
He mentioned that he just finished a movie starring Babil, taking delight as the youthful performer gradually embodies the powerful artistic lineage left by his father.
Shoojit stated, “Ronnie and I have recently completed a film project with Babil. He’s developing into a skillful artist, gradually making a name for himself in the industry.
Despite the limitations of words, his tribute served as a poignant reminder of an unyielding friendship that the passage of time can’t diminish, and of the indelible mark left by a gift as exceptional as Irrfan Khan’s acting talent.
On the tragic day of April 29, 2020, I bore witness to the heart-wrenching farewell of the remarkable Irrfan Khan, at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He fought valiantly against a neuroendocrine tumor, but in the end, his spirit was unable to overcome this relentless adversary.
Simultaneously, Babil Khan followed in his father’s path by debuting in the film industry in 2022 with Qala alongside Triptii Dimri. After that, he appeared in the web series The Railway Men, starring Kay Kay Menon and R. Madhavan. Most recently, he was featured in the cyber-thriller Logout, which made its debut on Zee 5.
