In 2024, approximately a decade following the premiere of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” director George Miller decided to focus on the popular character from that movie, Furiosa, for the film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” Actress Anya Taylor-Joy took over the role from Charlize Theron in this prequel, which tells the story of the time period prior to her encounter with Tom Hardy’s character, Max Rockatansky. Now that “Furiosa” has been released and can be streamed with a subscription labeled “(Mad) Max,” is it possible we might see more “Mad Max” movies in the future?
In a chat with Vulture, Miller expressed his thoughts on the potential continuation of the cinematic “Mad Max” series, commenting after the mixed reception of “Furiosa,” which was critically acclaimed but didn’t meet commercial expectations.
I have another story idea, and being experienced in storytelling, I tend to accumulate numerous stories, both mentally and as screenplays or detailed notes that can be transformed into screenplays. Essentially, I could be called a professional dreamer. As a child, my daydreaming was often criticized: “George would perform better academically if he didn’t spend so much time daydreaming” was written in my school reports.
It’s clear that George Miller never runs short on ideas for the Mad Max series, some of which he’s even written down (metaphorically speaking). However, not all these ideas are strong enough to become full-fledged films. There is one particular idea that he envisions progressing, and he actually has a drafted script for it. But, this isn’t the project he plans to work on next as he shared with the media.
There are numerous tales, one of which is Mad Max. However, this isn’t my immediate plan as there are two other activities I’m eager to pursue next. But if the stars align unexpectedly, who knows? Often, you prepare for a film project and then unforeseen events occur. Some pieces fall into place while others don’t, so all I can say is we’ll have to wait and see.
More Mad Max Stories

After long wait, I finally got around to watching Furiosa. What a treat it was to delve deeper into the world of Mad Max: Fury Road through its prequel, with its rich exploration of Gas Town and the Bullet Farm.
I finally managed to watch Furiosa, and I must say, I adored how the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road filled in the backstory of Gas Town and The Bullet Farm.
Tom Hardy hasn’t watched “Furiosa” yet, but he still had positive comments regarding the “Mad Max: Fury Road” spinoff.
Beyond George Miller pursuing other career paths, let me clarify that although Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was lauded by critics, it failed at the box office. The prequel managed only $168 million globally against a production cost of $173.8 million, which could make Warner Bros. Pictures cautious about investing in another Mad Max film. However, it’s not entirely ruled out, so as the director suggested, we can only wait and find out what transpires in the future.
Regarding potential forthcoming “Mad Max” films, it seems most probable that we’d see “Mad Max: The Wasteland,” a concept George Miller has long discussed. This story would delve into Max Rockatansky’s activities leading up to his capture by Immortan Joe’s forces at the start of “Fury Road.” However, Miller has also hinted at a post-“Fury Road” film featuring Charlize Theron’s Furiosa ruling over the Citadel. If Miller feels strongly about this idea, it could potentially become a reality.
Regardless of what transpires, always remember to revisit TopMob for significant developments regarding the Mad Max series. Meanwhile, you can stream classics like Furiosa, Fury Road, and the original Mad Max films on Max, a popular streaming platform.
