As a long-time fan of the original “Beetlejuice” movie, I must say that my anticipation for this sequel has been building up like a ghoul in a graveyard waiting for its cue to rise. After decades of waiting and wondering if we’d ever see our favorite specter again, Tim Burton has finally unleashed the ‘Juice once more, and I couldn’t be happier!

As a long-awaited fan of the eerie world of “Beetlejuice”, it’s time to dive back in! Picking up from where we left off, Lydia Deetz, now an adult with her own paranormal show and family – fiancé Rory and daughter Astrid, is at the center of the action. Upon hearing about the passing of my father (Charles, portrayed by Jeffrey Jones), I return to Winter River, Connecticut, where I find myself face-to-face with my stepmom Delia Deetz.

Initially, it appears that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is receiving favorable reviews from critics. Out of 27 reviews, 21 have been positive so far. This could indicate that the film has potential to maintain its popularity through October, potentially boosting box office earnings during the Halloween season. Many critics who have weighed in so far are quite pleased with the release of ‘Beetlejuice’, as suggested by the trailer’s catchy phrase, “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” Sophie Monks Kaufman of IndieWire described the movie as a lively and well-structured supernatural adventure with emotion, stating that it maintains the film’s unique gothic quirks while injecting more heart into the story. Jo-Ann Titmarsh of the London Evening Standard was equally enthusiastic, saying that viewers will exit the cinema with a bounce in their step and a smile on their face. The BBC’s Nicholas Barber even goes as far as to claim that the sequel outperforms its predecessor in every way. Some critics believe this is a strong comeback for director Tim Burton following disappointments like “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and “Dumbo.”

While not every positive review was overly enthusiastic, Empire Online acknowledged the film’s flaws but commended Michael Keaton’s performance. In essence, Variety’s Owen Gleiberman stated that the movie, while not as good as the original “Beetlejuice,” still retained enough of Tim Burton’s style. Many critics appreciated the film for providing an enjoyable theater experience, despite believing it might lack depth in the long run. This straightforwardness and a touch of fan service led some critics to criticize “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” quite harshly.

In every movie, there are some mixed reviews – praise alongside constructive criticism. Kevin Maher from The Times found the film to be a tired rehash, stating that it’s pleasant to reminisce but lacks originality. He expressed his desire for more depth and substance, as The Guardian’s Xan Brooks felt that the new characters and storylines introduced by Tim Burton don’t quite gel together effectively.

Richard Lawson from Vanity Fair expressed his viewpoint that the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” lacks vitality. He stated that with its weak humor, predictable emotions, and excessive attempts to shock us, it’s a squandered opportunity of a talented cast and an insult to the legacy of a timeless film. What makes this particularly disappointing is that those responsible for its creation should have been aware that tampering with something that has been peacefully preserved for so long is not advisable. Moreover, there was a noticeable lack of effort to preserve the original film’s uniqueness.

Robbie Collin from The Telegraph criticized the movie for its disorganized storyline that seemed overly focused on pleasing fans. He pointed out that it sounded like the writers were gleeffully incorporating elements from Tim Burton’s original, which remains highly enjoyable, without regard to whether these additions made any sense within the context of the new plot.

Will it be a success or a flop? The public’s opinion will matter when the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” premieres to kick off the autumn cinema season on September 6.
