As a longtime fan of “Deadliest Catch,” I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Edgar Hansen, the indispensable right hand man to Sig Hansen on The Northwestern. However, his absence from the show since his 2018 arrest and conviction for sexually assaulting a minor has left a void that’s hard to fill.
Originally, Edgar Hansen was a key figure in the V/F The Northwestern’s crew. However, following his 2018 arrest and conviction for sexually assaulting a minor, he has become an unwelcome presence on the ship’s deck as well as in the reality show “Deadliest Catch.” While some devoted fans may recall that he served as Sig Hansen’s right-hand man as captain, there is now an empty storyline where he once stood. Yet, attentive viewers have observed that Edgar continues to work for his brother in a supervisory role on the deck — a fact they have noticed during episodes of “The Deadliest Catch.
Currently, Edgar Hansen is not appearing on the show due to legal issues. In July 2018, he admitted guilt for sexually assaulting a minor who was 16 at the time of the incident in October 2017. The case resulted in a fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation charge, classified as a gross misdemeanor. Hansen received a suspended jail sentence of 364 days and was ordered to pay court fines and fees amounting to $1,653.
After that point, Hansen hasn’t appeared on “The Deadliest Catch” anymore, but some Reddit users claim to have seen him. In fact, one user went as far as checking his records in 2023 and discovered he last applied for a fishing permit in 2021. If you watch carefully, several episodes seem to suggest that he’s still aboard the Northwestern.
Eagle-eyed viewers can still spy Edgar on The Deadliest Catch
Several Reddit users believe that Edgar Hansen has been part of the crew during the filming of “Deadliest Catch” on the Northwestern, but Discovery is deliberately editing him out from the final cut. According to user u/hjhof1, he can be seen in a blurred form on deck. User u/Jeff-Fan-2425 also confirmed his presence earlier this season, with just his hands visible.
It appears that Edgar is continuing to work with his “Deadliest Catch” team, even though he’s not currently being shown on the series. One wonders if Discovery is deliberately keeping his face off-screen due to his recent public controversy, or if he has chosen to stay out of sight himself. Since he remains active on the Northwestern, only future episodes will reveal whether we’ve seen the end of Edgar’s appearances.
