As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t help but be awestruck by the colossal figure of Galactus looming over the silver screen in the upcoming “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” With a presence that makes Thanos seem like a walk in the park, it’s natural to question if this titan is a Celestial. However, let me clear things up – Galactus isn’t one of them, despite being able to stand his ground against one. He’s an entirely distinct entity, carrying on a timeless legacy from beings long past. The Marvel Comics Universe has shown us a cycle of cosmic death and rebirth as the reason for the universe’s constant expansion and contraction. Before our current multiverse even began, there were six complete cycles of destruction and creation, and Galactus, whose origins were laid out in “Super-Villain Classics” #1, lived as a mortal being named Galan during the sixth cycle.
In the Sixth Universe, Galan belonged to the sophisticated Taa-an alien race, one of the few species that endured until the universe’s conclusion. As one of the last living beings in the Sixth Universe, Galan and his surviving comrades bravely plunged into the heart of a lethal radiation pod that had annihilated almost all life. Tragically, most of Galan’s fellow survivors perished instantly from the radiation, but Galan miraculously survived. This survival caught the attention of an omnipotent entity named Omnimax who chose to recruit Galan as his successor.
Omnimax had previously lived as a mortal in the Fifth Universe and later evolved into the all-powerful Sentience of the Sixth Universe. In a remarkable turn of events, Omnimax combined his essence with Galactus, a cosmic entity he’d destroyed during his reign as the Sixth Cosmos’ devastator. Using the life energy Galactus had amassed while destroying worlds, Omnimax initiated the Seventh Cosmos and placed Galan in an incubation state.
After emerging from his prolonged slumber, Galan was reborn into the Seventh Cosmos as none other than Galactus, the all-powerful cosmic entity who feeds on worlds.
Galactus is one-of-a-kind
As a devoted Marvel fan, I’ve noticed some striking contrasts between Galactus’ abilities and those wielded by the Celestial beings. Yet, it’s their origins and purposes that set them apart most distinctly. The Celestials were forged from the First Firmament, an embodiment of the initial universe ever conceived (the First Cosmos). In a rebellious twist, the Celestials defied this creator, and their uprising was the catalyst for the emergence of the multiverse. In essence, Galactus is not only a blood relative of the First Firmament but also a cosmic entity born from the actions of the very beings that rebelled against him.
The Celestials are an advanced race or group of beings who pursue their unique goals, often exploring the edges of existence by crafting new universes and manipulating life energy. For instance, they employ entities like the Eternals to ready planets for the emergence of new Celestials. In contrast, Galactus serves a significant role in the universe, not being motivated by personal aspirations, loyalty, or ethical standards. Known as the World Devourer, Galactus is perpetually famished and can only partially quench his hunger by consuming planets that harbor advanced civilizations. To sustain himself, he must consume planets, and this consumption is crucial for the continuity of the universe. However, Galactus doesn’t select planets based on any specific criteria; instead, he discovers them randomly. By devouring planets, Galactus maintains the cycle of birth and death in the cosmos, and the energy he has absorbed will contribute to the formation of the Eighth Universe when the Seventh reaches its end.
