As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of countless gaming titans. From Pokémon to World of Warcraft, I’ve been there, done that. So when Genshin Impact stormed onto the scene four years ago, I was skeptical but intrigued. The game had a unique charm, a captivating world, and characters that were hard to resist.
Towards the end of 2020, an unexpected gacha game emerged and took the gaming world by surprise. The release of Hoyoverse’s hit adventure game, Genshin Impact, captivated players with its engaging gameplay, captivating character designs, and distinct mechanics that set it apart from other gacha games.
Over the course of four years, it continues to thrive without a hitch. Numerous competitors in its genre have attempted to dethrone it, yet the affection for Genshin Impact remains unwavering.
Until this very year, there hadn’t been any game as popular as Wuthering Waves, which just came out. The numbers are indicating a significant fan base for it.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but ponder: Will Wuthering Waves manage to dethrone the reigning king of gacha adventure gaming? Could it possibly outmatch… the mighty Genshin Impact?
Considering my subjective preference and the data available online, Wuthering Waves seems to have less players compared to Genshin Impact, with approximately half its current player base (Wuthering Waves has about 66K, while Genshin Impact boasts around 120K).
As someone who’s been a gamer for quite some time now, I must say it’s truly impressive to witness a fresh gacha game, such as this one released this year, quickly gaining popularity and numbers that even Genshin Impact took longer to achieve. It just goes to show how much the gaming industry evolves and adapts to player preferences. I remember waiting patiently for Genshin Impact to gain traction, and now it seems like history is repeating itself with this new game. Kudos to its creators for their successful strategy!
As a passionate gamer, I can confidently say that Genshin Impact has a robust base, a fact evident from the impressive 61 million subscribers it amassed between July and August 2024 – a testament to four years of dedication to the gaming community. It’s mind-blowing to think that Wuthering Waves, just one aspect of this game, attracted 12 million users in a matter of months. The success of Genshin Impact is undeniably multifaceted and intriguing.
One notable contrast between these two games lies in their character design. Genshin Impact typically features a whimsical aesthetic, vibrant hues, cheerful conclusions, and so on. It’s uncommon to find somber moments in it, but when they occur, the theme swiftly shifts to a sentimentally sweet one that some gamers now find tiresome. After four years, a change of tone seems appropriate. Wuthering Waves provided them with just that.
Wuthering Waves offers a somber narrative with often melancholic tales to explore, which many gamers have been eagerly anticipating as a refreshing twist on traditional gameplay. Unlike the constant vibrancy and cheerfulness, it provides an innovative approach to the genre by not always relying on bright hues and cheerful motifs. Moreover, unlike Hoyoverse’s game, Wuthering Waves combines novel and familiar game mechanics for a unique gaming experience.
In the game Wuthering Waves, there’s a feature called “Slow-Time Evasion” that temporarily slows down time and shields you from incoming enemy attacks. On the other hand, Genshin Impact lacks this specific mechanic, but it shares similarities with several well-known games like Bayonetta, Sekiro, Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, and numerous others in terms of its gameplay style.
In this game, speed and timing are crucial, while defense isn’t always reliable. To stay alive, you need to dodge or avoid threats at all times. This unique playstyle drew in gamers who were already fans of the games I mentioned, as well as gacha gamers seeking fresh experiences. The game offered them something different – a new kind of adventure that Genshin Impact didn’t provide.
