Is It Time for a Mirror’s Edge Remaster? Reliving Gaming’s Parkour Icon

Admittedly, I yearn for the days of Mirror’s Edge. However, given DICE’s actions with Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, it seems unlikely we’ll get to revisit this cherished series again. This game held a special place in my heart due to its unique and unconventional gameplay style that stood out in the late 2000s.

It’s surprising that a game based on jumping between buildings could be successful, but it indeed was! Moreover, it played a significant role in shaping a cultural era related to parkour and minimalist aesthetics during the late 2000s.

Mirror’s Edge essentially revolved around parkour, which defined its essence. The game didn’t promote combat extensively; instead, it suggested dealing with adversaries by knocking them off balconies or executing a skillful dive kick at the right moment. The main character, Faith, simply had to persist, keep running, leap over ledges, and slide along building edges. It was quite straightforward.

The initial Mirror’s Edge game was meticulously crafted to deliver a straightforward, uncluttered experience. Every aspect, including its level design with predominantly primary colors, reinforced its minimalistic style. Navigation was intuitive as the color scheme clearly indicated directions. It pioneered the now-familiar approach in level design, often referred to as “yellow markings,” which has since become commonplace in many games.

The straightforward and uncluttered design drew in players who hadn’t consciously sought it out. Remarkably, the narrative – though slim – had a substantial impact for its era.

In the Mirror’s Edge series, Faith served as the main focal point, essentially being the heart of these games. She stands alone in the realm of memorable Asian characters within gaming. Her distinctive appearance, characterized by her signature eye makeup, short bob hairstyle, and tank top outfit, has sparked a surge of cosplayers and fans eager to emulate her style. During that time, for every person dressed as a Big Daddy or Little Sister, there were usually one or two individuals donning the likeness of Faith Connors.

It’s rather unfortunate that the game, specifically Mirror’s Edge, has mostly disappeared from popular awareness these days. Most contemporary gamers might only recognize it by its main character or as the “parkour game,” which does make me a bit nostalgic.

It appears that the Swedish studio DICE has shifted its focus from Mirror’s Edge towards its more successful Battlefield games, potentially leaving Faith’s return uncertain. The absence of this series could be significant, as Mirror’s Edge struggles to regain its footing following the less successful Catalyst, a game that expanded into an open world at the expense of its original streamlined essence.

Despite the difficulties of bringing back the series, it’s likely that enhancing the original game wouldn’t pose as much trouble. This could serve as a clear indication to DICE and EA that there remains a strong desire for more Mirror’s Edge, even after it took a step back from the limelight.

They just need to take a leap of faith.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about future Mirror’s Edge content! If you’re as eager as I am to stay updated, make sure to keep visiting Gfinityesports.com – your ultimate destination for all things video games!
