Is It Time to Remake The Prince of Egypt After How To Train Your Dragon’s Success?

Guess who’s entirely back on the live-action adaptation train, woo-hoo!

Indeed, while I may not be entirely convinced yet, witnessing the live-action adaptation of “How To Train Your Dragon” scheduled for 2025 has certainly stirred a sense within me – one that you might anticipate based on its reputation.

Given our current discussion about this remarkable movie, let’s shift our focus towards another DreamWorks Animation masterpiece that seems perfectly suited for a breathtaking live-action adaptation – The Prince of Egypt. Ring any bells? If it doesn’t, let me explain why Universal should consider bringing this story to life in their next live-action project.

The Live-Action How To Train Your Dragon Changed The Game For Adaptations

To begin with, allow me to clarify that my motivation for penning this down stems solely from the adaptation of the movie titled “HTTYD“. If you happen to be unacquainted with this adaption, I find it somewhat puzzling as to why you’ve found yourself here.

I’ve been strongly against live-action remakes, especially Disney’s upcoming ones. While I once backed these projects, the market seems to be experiencing burnout in this area. Many of these adaptations come off as mere money-making schemes and fall short of emulating the originals. To be honest, revisiting Snow White on a streaming platform made me understand why my enthusiasm for them has waned.

In a unique twist, HTTYD elevated the storyline significantly. While it was essentially a continuation of the initial film, its success was guaranteed. However, what truly set it apart were the clever modifications made to specific scenes. For instance, seamlessly incorporating Nico Parker and other new cast members into Viking folklore, developing endearing side-characters, and enhancing Toothless’s appearance to make him even more lovable, all contributed to its greatness.

Universal truly excelled beyond expectations, and I am thrilled about the future – that’s why I mention “The Prince of Egypt.

I Think The Prince Of Egypt Would Hit Hard As A Live-Action

It’s clear that there’s already a sequel in the works for this live-action movie, or at least it’s being actively developed. So, by 2027, we can look forward to seeing the live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and the charming duo of Hiccup and Astrid again. Nevertheless, I believe that a live-action adaptation of “The Prince of Egypt” could prove to be quite powerful.

I’ve discussed “The Prince of Egypt” on numerous occasions. This is among the rare DreamWorks Animation productions made using 2D animation, before the shift to CGI became dominant, and it’s undeniably one of the finest films I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching – a statement that carries significant weight given my extensive movie-watching experience.

This film offers an engaging retelling of the story of Moses, making it ideal for anyone seeking to understand him better. What’s more, it’s visually captivating to the point that I find myself still amazed at its quality, even 27 years after its release. On my 85-inch living room TV, the animation remains impressive. The villain, Ramses II, is well-developed, and the exploration of their familial ties adds depth and intrigue to the narrative.

In essence, this DreamWorks film stands out as one of the top ones. I wholeheartedly endorse viewing it. Interestingly, I’d prefer this movie over the beloved dragon series from How to Train Your Dragon, and that’s quite a statement, especially when considering its transition into a live-action adaptation. To be frank, the narrative is so compelling that it pulls you in deeply.

The Music Would Be Outstanding

Are you curious about what else complements this well? The soundtrack and the original score. The musical “The Prince of Egypt” showcases some of the most moving and emotionally intense musical compositions you’ll come across, all thanks to the fact that it was composed by Hans Zimmer.

Indeed, you’re correct! He is the composer responsible for memorable soundtracks like those from The Lion King, Dune, Pirates of the Caribbean, Inception, Dunkirk, Interstellar (and many more). His work on The Prince of Egypt is simply breathtaking.

Are you curious about who composed the soundtrack? The tunes that are sung? That’s Stephen Schwartz, an incredibly talented individual known for creating musicals such as Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, Pocahontas, Enchanted. What a fantastic lineup! It would be truly exhilarating to experience all this music brought to life in a live-action adaptation!

The Scenery Would Be So Easy To Replicate

This isn’t that surprising, but the scenery would be pretty easy to replicate.

Let me clarify, I don’t want them to hold back or only do an average job. At the same time, given that the story is set in ancient Egypt, I believe it has the potential to be a fantastic live-action film, with ease of adaptation.

I prefer the authenticity of shooting a movie in a desert or near pyramids compared to using CGI dragons, though I may not fully grasp its complexities. Yet, it’s my belief that it would result in a visually stunning production, given modern technology and camera capabilities.

It’s Already A Critically Praised Animated Film, So It Would Certainly Live Up To A Live-Action Musical

I think The Prince of Egypt would excel in live-action, mainly because it has previously been well-received as an animated movie, providing a solid foundation for adaptation.

This movie might not be as exceptional as How to Train Your Dragon, and it’s likely a retelling of a biblical tale, which can sometimes alter the original message. Yet, more than 27 years after its release, there are many who still cherish this film. Its fanbase has continued to expand, particularly due to its soundtrack. It seems like I’m constantly encountering “The Plagues” on social media platforms now.

If by chance this story were transformed into a live-action film, I believe it would be quite successful. Compared to many other animated films, this one stands out as the one I’d most like to watch in real life.

Regardless of the path they choose, it’s inevitable that DreamWorks will soon release additional live-action adaptations. Therefore, I’m going to be patient and see when The Prince of Egypt is up next – if fortune smiles upon me.
