Is Laapataa Ladies Just a Copy? Netizens Weigh In on the Controversy!

Kiran Rao’s movie titled Laaptaa Ladies, directed by Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava, gained significant acclaim for its captivating narrative. Yet, an unexpected controversy emerged as allegations arose that the film might have copied a 2019 Arabic production named Burqa City. The dispute began when a video clip of Burqa City became widely popular online.

A social media user posted a scene from the Arabic film Burqa City, which depicts a newly married man looking for his wife who was inadvertently exchanged with another woman wearing a burqa. This popular clip came with a lengthy comment suggesting that India’s submission to the Oscars, Laapataa Ladies, has significant similarities to a 2019 short film.

As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle-related, I delved deeper into the narrative of the movie in question, and it struck me as remarkably similar to Kiran Rao’s work – but with a twist. Instead of burqas, she swapped them for ghoonghats (veils). The underlying theme was strikingly familiar: patriarchy, societal expectations, and female identity. And let me tell you, the scene at the Ravi Kishan police station had an unmistakable echo of inspiration.

Immediately following the video’s popularity online, it garnered varying responses from social media users. Some individuals voiced their displeasure, while others defended it, and numerous comments suggested that the movie’s storyline resembles the 1999 film “Ghoonghat Ke Pat Khol.

The user found the movie, which was set in India, to be highly entertaining and skillfully crafted. They also believed it was engaging, even if it was inspired by other works.”

“The second user suggested that the creator of the movie had a certain degree of creative liberty.

A different viewer stated, “The narrative appears to have been inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Noukadubi.’ In the late 90s or early 2000s, a TV movie named ‘Veil of Shame’ was broadcast on DD Metro that shared the same theme: brides being exchanged due to a veil incident during a train journey. It appears as though this plot serves as the foundation for all subsequent adaptations.

Under the production houses Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures, and Jio Studios, Laapataa Ladies was financed by Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan, and Jyoti Deshpande. This satirical comedy movie, written by Biplab Goswami, served as India’s submission for the Oscars in 2025.
