Under the guidance of newcomer director Jonathan Eusebio, the movie titled “Love Hurts” was released in cinemas this month. Regrettably, it’s received some unfavorable critic reviews, with a Tomatometer score of just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Popcornmeter is at 61%, but even that isn’t particularly impressive. It seems the audience may have appreciated the film more than critics, but this doesn’t seem to be reflected in its box office performance. During its opening weekend, it placed third, trailing behind Dog Man, which reclaimed the number one spot yet again, and Heart Eyes, a comedy-slasher romance that premiered at number two.
Despite garnering less-than-favorable reviews and opening modestly at third place, “Love Hurts” hasn’t been enjoying the box office triumph the studio initially anticipated. Given Ke Huy Quan’s first live-action movie post his 2023 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” in 2022, fans were anticipating a more impressive performance. As one of two Oscar winners in this film, the other being Ariana DeBose, who won her award for “West Side Story” in 2021, it’s unfortunate to see the movie struggling at the box office. Although it hasn’t completely flopped yet, it faces a tough road ahead if it intends to gain traction in the coming weeks.
What Is ‘Love Hurts’ About?
Read Our Review
The story Love Hurts revolves around a seemingly ordinary realtor, Marvin, residing in Milwaukee, who is portrayed by Ke Huy Quan. However, Marvin’s tranquil existence is disrupted when an unexpected reappearance from his old partner in crime, Rose, forces him to face his tumultuous past. A red envelope from Rose sets the events in motion, and as Alvin “Knuckles” Gable, his estranged criminal brother, pursues him, Marvin is compelled to reckon with the life he thought he had left behind.
Navigating the repercussions of my past actions, I find myself drawing upon my skills as a former assassin – a role I never wished to revisit. Caught in a brutal world filled with ruthless individuals like King (Marshawn Lynch) and those who thrive on betrayal, it doesn’t take long before I decide to strike back. With my open houses turning into lethal battlefields, I’ll do whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of my volatile brother and confront the regrets of my past. Aiming to blend humor, action, and romance, Love Hurts aimed to be the ideal film for the season of love. Regrettably, it didn’t manage to attract the audience attention it was hoping for during its initial release weekend.
Was the Box Office Return for ‘Love Hurts’ Really That Bad?
Although “Love Hurts” ranked third at the box office, it’s not automatically considered a box office failure just yet. With an initial budget of $18 million, it has managed to earn nearly half that amount after two weekends. However, the film’s unfavorable reviews might hinder its attendance, considering numerous other films are available for viewing. As “Captain America: Brave New World” hits theaters, “Love Hurts” will face tough competition in the upcoming weeks.
Given that movies such as “Heart Eyes” and “Dog Man” have garnered favorable criticisms, it seems challenging for “Love Hurts” to make headway at the box office. Initially, its best chance lay in a strong debut weekend. However, with unfavorable reviews, audiences might prefer other films over “Love Hurts”. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean the film is doomed. Instead, it’s swimming against a rather formidable tide that’s soon expected to be swept aside by more attractive alternatives.
Is ‘Love Hurts’ Worth Watching in Theaters?
In light of numerous movies currently showing in cinemas and more on the horizon, selecting Love Hurts instead of popular titles such as Heart Eyes, Captain America: Brave New World, The Monkey, or Last Breath might seem a challenging choice. Considering the fact that most viewers don’t catch every theatrical release, it appears prudent to wait until Love Hurts becomes available for streaming, making it more convenient to watch at your leisure.
If viewers aren’t particularly interested in watching it, it would be wiser for them to save their money or spend it on a movie that promises a more satisfying viewing experience. However, everyone has their own tastes. If Love Hurts catches your interest, then go ahead and watch it at the theater, as it is currently being screened there.
