As a seasoned fashion enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many creative directors, I must say, the news about Matthieu Blazy potentially taking over at Chanel is truly exhilarating! His impressive resume, having worked with design legends like Raf Simons, Phoebe Philo, and most recently, Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta, paints a picture of a designer who knows how to breathe new life into iconic brands.
It appears that the prolonged search for a new creative director at Chanel might be drawing to a close, as suggested by recent reports from WWD. On Friday, their sources hinted that the esteemed French fashion house could be announcing Virginie Viard’s successor around mid-December. There seems to be a strong indication that Matthieu Blazy is being considered for the position.
A designer born in Paris, who has significantly elevated the prestige of Bottega Veneta to a coveted label in Milan (earning €836 million EUR in revenue during the first half of this year, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period last year), is now being considered as a potential successor for Chanel’s leadership position, according to reports. Sources suggest that Bottega Veneta has already begun seeking potential replacements for their current designer, with internal candidates showing interest in the role. Neither Chanel, Blazy, nor Kering (the owner of Bottega Veneta) have publicly commented on these rumors.
For quite some time now, there’s been a flurry of speculation regarding who might succeed Virginie Viard as Chanel’s creative director since she left in June. Earlier rumors pointed to John Galliano, but given that the brand is owned by a prominent Jewish family, his past antisemitic actions could potentially dampen such discussions. Other popular theories have included Hedi Slimane, Jeremy Scott, Sarah Burton, and Marc Jacobs as potential candidates for Chanel’s leadership. According to reports from WWD, the House has interviewed Pieter Mulier, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Jacobs, and Scott for the position.
Blazy is a fresh face in the fashion world, but his impressive background makes him well-suited for the role. He kicked off his career as a menswear designer for Raf Simons in 2007 and rose through the ranks to become the lead designer at Maison Margiela. His standout collections earned him the nickname “the least known, yet most famous designer” before Galliano’s tenure at the House. Later, he worked under Phoebe Philo at Céline, and then collaborated with Simons again at Calvin Klein from 2016 to 2019. In November 2021, Blazy took on the role of creative director at Bottega Veneta.
It’s unclear at this point whether he will visit Chanel soon or not, so keep an eye out for any developments on this topic as they emerge.
