Prime Video’s ‘The Sticky’ Is a Delightfully Strange Dark Comedy
In a stunning display of versatility, renowned actress Margot Martindale demonstrated yet again why she’s a powerhouse in Hollywood, starring as the lead in the darkly humorous series titled “The Sticky“. As Ruth Landry, a resilient and experienced Canadian maple syrup farmer, she portrays a woman who is compelled to resort to criminal activities after government officials arrive at her cherished farm, declaring her an unlicensed operator. Facing the brink of despair with no other alternatives, Ruth concocts a complex plan to swipe millions and exact vengeance on those who harmed her.
In a twist of events, Ruth teams up with the impulsive Boston gangster Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos) and the often overlooked security guard Remy (Guillaume Cyr). Together, they set out to execute an audacious heist: the theft of maple syrup barrels, from which they plan to extract the precious sap and replace it with water. After meticulously replacing the stolen barrels in the warehouse, they aim to sell this ill-gotten sweet liquid on the black market for a substantial gain. With the clock ticking, Ruth and her unconventional crew must pull off this intricate and eccentric scheme before anyone realizes what’s happened.
‘The Sticky’ Is a Wild and Quirky Tale Based on True Events
Although the concept of The Sticky might seem incredibly unlikely and fantastical to many, it’s worth noting that this unusual series draws on some real-life occurrences as inspiration. The creative minds behind the show, Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, found a significant portion of their storyline in the notorious Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. This audacious theft took place over several months between 2011 and 2012, during which approximately 2,000 tons of maple syrup were stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.
In this timeframe, the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers Federation managed and operated a significant facility that accounted for about 77% of the global maple syrup production. A theft valued at approximately $18.7 million from this facility ultimately marked the most lucrative heist in Canadian history. Over nine thousand five hundred seventy-one barrels were reported stolen, with suspicions pointing towards an inside job. The thieves transported these barrels using a truck to a sugar shack, where they drained the syrup and replaced it with water. However, their carelessness in concealing their actions led to their eventual capture, as they neglected to refill the empty barrels.
During the FPAQ’s yearly check of 600-pound barrels, astonishment ensued when an inspector found them vacant. Upon further investigation, additional syrup barrels were discovered from a Kedgwick exporter. From December 18 to 20, 2012, the police apprehended 17 suspects linked to the theft, among them was Richard Vallières, the mastermind behind the scheme, who received an eight-year prison sentence and a $9.4 million fine. Despite seeming unbelievable, this true-life heist occurred and played a role in the creation of The Sticky.
