The 2025 lineup for Disney movies looks promising, with “Captain America: Brave New World” kicking things off to a good start and potentially setting the stage for an exceptional year for Disney. Nevertheless, one of the major uncertainties for Disney this year is the live-action adaptation of “Snow White“. Although most of Disney’s remakes have been enormous box office successes, there are signs that “Snow White” might not fare as well.
Snow White’s release is just around three weeks off, and according to THR, the film is projected to earn between $48 and $58 million during its opening weekend. On its own, this figure isn’t particularly concerning; however, it’s a decrease from earlier predictions in February, which suggested an opening as high as $70 million.
Snow White’s Box Office Projections Are Heading In The Wrong Direction
Indeed, Disney doesn’t prefer these predictions pointing towards a downward trend, as it’s not the typical trajectory they follow. Typically, early forecasts begin modestly but gradually rise as time progresses. As we approach a movie’s premiere, increased marketing helps build audience awareness, resulting in higher and more optimistic projections.
Disney is eagerly anticipating that Snow White, the live-action reboot of its inaugural animated film, could generate blockbuster results similar to those of other Disney adaptations like Aladdin and The Lion King. With a strong potential for success based on its concept alone, this remake could join the ranks of successful Disney remakes that have contributed significantly to Disney’s earnings over the years, primarily due to a few outstanding productions.
Snow White’s Biggest Problem Isn’t Box Office, It’s Budget
In essence, even though Snow White earned approximately $50 million during its opening weekend, it doesn’t automatically mean things are grim for the film. A $50 million opening in late March for a fairy tale adaptation could be promising. However, the challenge lies in the fact that Snow White’s reported production cost is roughly $250 million. This implies that to be considered successful, Snow White would need box office revenues comparable to those of billion-dollar blockbusters – a tall order for Disney.
It’s generally more challenging for Snow White to reap similar profits since it starts with significantly less than average. Occasionally, movies earn more on their second weekend than their opening, such as Heart Eyes recently, or maintain strong box office returns week after week without a massive opening weekend like The Greatest Showman did a few years ago. But this isn’t the norm.
There are three weeks remaining until “Snow White” opens, leaving ample room for its box office predictions to rise. We can expect a boost in promotional efforts as we approach the release date, which might create enough buzz to make the film the success it essentially requires to thrive.
