Is Sentry the Hidden Villain in Thunderbolts’ Super Bowl Trailer?

So far, most previews for Thunderbolts have primarily showcased the ensemble dynamic of its quirky antagonist characters. The lineup for the titular team has been a mystery, but they seem to be off-beat villains with a fun group chemistry. However, today, a fresh trailer dropped for the Marvel Studios blockbuster that offers a clearer glimpse into the storyline. Although there’s an effort to conceal the main antagonist in this new footage, I have a strong hunch about who it might be.

In the latest teaser for “Thunderbolts,” it’s disclosed that the squad has been formed due to a grave danger that has arisen, and there seems to be an agreement among all parties that the Avengers will not gather to counteract it. The menace’s strength is demonstrated through instances of people vanishing into thin air and helicopters plummeting from the sky. However, whenever the main antagonist appears on screen, they are merely depicted as a shadowy figure.

It appears that Marvel Studios often employs visual effects to alter scenes in promotional content, and it seems likely that this technique is used here to conceal the identity of the antagonist.

It’s a commendable try, but it seems quite obvious to me that the character being referred to is Bob Reynolds, also known as Sentry, portrayed by Lewis Pullman.

People who have been closely following Thunderbolts might remember that Bob initially appeared as a character in the first trailer for the September blockbuster, depicted merely as an ordinary individual unaware of why he was encountering a band of costumed heroes. Since then, we haven’t seen much more of him in the subsequent releases, and his lack of presence could be due to him being the main antagonist that Marvel Studios is intentionally keeping out of the spotlight before the release.

In Marvel Comics, Sentry is usually portrayed as a hero, but a large portion of his storyline involves him fighting an entity called the Void – a sinister part of himself that he strives to suppress. When the character was first created, it was revealed that he went so far as to make people forget about him in order to prevent the Void from causing global destruction.

Under the direction of Jake Schreier, the movie titled “Thunderbolts*” is set to hit the screens as the second Marvel Cinematic Universe film in 2025, making its appearance after “Captain America: Brave New World“, which premieres in cinemas nationwide this coming Friday.
