Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds About to Scare Us with a Horror Episode?

For fans eagerly anticipating the next adventures in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it’s important to note that Season 3 is yet to receive an official release date on the 2025 television schedule. However, those with a Paramount+ subscription can find solace knowing more episodes are on the way. The good news is that production for Season 4 was given the green light in April 2024 and filming started earlier this month. Although we may have to wait a while before diving into new stories, recent developments have piqued my curiosity as to whether one of those stories might involve a horror-themed episode.

This thought came to mind after seeing director Axelle Carolyn share on Instagram that she’s in Toronto, Canada to helm a “very special episode” of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. She thanked show creators Akira Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers for “trusting” her with Season 4’s fourth episode, so clearly something interesting is being cooked up. Carolyn also mentioned that she’s been a fan of this franchise ever since a friend of her introduced her to First Contact, one of the higher-ranking Star Trek movies, “some 25 years ago.”

It seems quite plausible that Carolyn will join the cast of Strange New Worlds Season 4, considering her extensive background in directing. Shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor, Creepshow, American Horror Story, The Midnight Club, Mayfair Witches, and Them are just a few on her impressive list. Given this resume, it’s reasonable to expect that her episode for Strange New Worlds may incorporate some eerie or frightening aspects.

It’s worth noting that on several occasions, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has dabbled with horror elements, such as in “All Those Who Wander” from Season 1 (resulting in Hemmer’s demise) and “Lost in Translation” from Season 2, where Uhura experienced eerie visions of a zombie-like Hemmer. Though I’m not particularly fond of horror, I wouldn’t object to an episode that delves into the genre more intensely, as long as it avoids excessive adult content. Given Axelle Carolyn’s expertise, such an episode could potentially be quite compelling.

I’m genuinely excited about the journey ahead as we still have a long road to travel before unveiling the plot of the fourth episode in Strange New Worlds Season 4. Carolyn, joining Jonathan Frakes, is the second director announced for this season, both working on Starfleet Academy. In terms of cast, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babe Olusanmokun, and Rebecca Romijn will continue their roles as series regulars, while Paul Wesley will persist in his recurring role as James T. Kirk.

Regarding the forthcoming Season 3 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, Montgomery Scott, portrayed by Martin Quinn, will be a permanent cast member once more. Additionally, Carol Kane and Melanie Scrofano will rejoin as Pelia and Marie Batel, respectively. Some fresh additions to the crew include Cillian O’Sullivan, who takes on Roger Korby, and Rhys Darby, whose role remains unspecified. Keep tuned for further updates on this prequel spin-off of “The Original Series” as we continue our extensive coverage of upcoming “Star Trek” productions.
