There’s been lots of discussion online about Abhishek Banerjee’s movie Stolen, which recently premiered on Amazon Prime. The film has been a hot topic due to its gripping storyline, heart-pounding suspense, and exceptional performances by the actors. If you’ve watched the movie or even just the trailer, I’m sure you’re curious if it’s based on real events. To clarify, yes, the film draws inspiration from the 2018 Karbi Anglong lynching case in Assam.
What was Assam’s Karbi Anglong lynching case all about?
Based on accounts, Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath were making their way through the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Coincidentally, residents in the region were alarmed by a WhatsApp rumor claiming child kidnappers were active in the same area at that time. Misled by this belief, the villagers launched an attack on these two men.
In spite of Niloptal and Abhijit passionately appealing for their innocence before the crowd and making every effort to convince them, the villagers ended up dragging them from their vehicle and brutally killing them with sticks and rocks.
Besides capturing the violent incident on camera, these perpetrators further shared it widely, leading to a distressing viral video that provoked intense public anger across the nation.
