Is ‘Suits LA’ Haunted by a Ghostly Secret?

Even though Suits LA is a spin-off from the popular show Suits, there are notable distinctions between the two. For instance, Suits doesn’t feature a ghost as a regular character. In contrast, Suits LA introduces an entertainment lawyer portrayed by Stephen Amell who manages his own law firm in Los Angeles. Interestingly, in the premiere episode itself, it was disclosed that the protagonist, Ted Black, had been conversing with a ghost throughout the entire episode, adding a supernatural twist to the storyline.

The Ghost Is Ted’s Dead Brother, Eddie

In the debut episode of Suits LA, we encounter Eddie Black, portrayed by newcomer Carson A. Egan, quite early on. The scene finds Ted Black in his home, with Eddie there to offer support as Ted emerges from a troubling flashback. For a while, the identity of Eddie remains unclear, and as the story unfolds, his role becomes increasingly enigmatic.

In the story, Eddie primarily resides within the house, which suggests a familial connection, yet subtly hints at his spectral nature. The ghost Eddie resembles the age of Eddie when he passed away, initially leading viewers to perceive him as a potential sibling or offspring. A flashback featuring a young Ted, where Eddie remains unchanged from the audience’s initial encounter with him, gives a clue that something is amiss and Eddie might be an imaginary figure in Ted’s mind.

In the episode, we see Ted conversing with his father in a flashback, this time on his deathbed. As they talk, it becomes clear that Ted had an older brother named Eddie, who passed away at a young age. Sadly, Ted’s father never attended Eddie’s funeral and didn’t seem to care much for him. One fond memory Ted shares is of a day when the three of them went to a Yankees game together – a day that brought immense joy to Eddie’s life, but one his father didn’t appreciate as he didn’t want Eddie present.

In another phrasing, here’s how it goes: Ted departs, leaving his father behind and facing his own grief. Later at home, Ted converses with Eddie. With a framed picture of the two at a Yankees game in hand, Ted expresses, “Today I’d prefer to spend the day only with you.” As Ted weeps, Eddie embraces him before vanishing, unveiling that Eddie is a spirit.

How Eddie Factors Into ‘Suits LA’

In the series, Eddie plays an essential part in Ted’s narrative. The show delves into the reasons behind Ted’s relocation from New York to Los Angeles. While in LA, Ted experienced a disappointing criminal law case which he vowed never to practice again. Despite his father offering him a prestigious position at their law firm, the strain caused by Eddie’s demise prevented Ted from accepting it.

Throughout the season, conversations with Eddie will provide deeper understanding of how Ted’s past experiences molded him into the lawyer he is today. With his biological father deceased, it seems that Eddie, appearing as a ghost, serves as the closest family Ted has left. Perhaps, Eddie can help Ted reconsider his behavior towards characters like Rick, a former associate of Ted’s, and Samantha, Ted’s ex-partner.

The initial episode delved into the instance where Ted broke his promise to abstain from criminal law, doing so to rescue his legal firm. This dilemma is set to unfold further as the season progresses, with it being a point of contention for individuals like Rick who find it hard to trust Ted due to this decision. Let’s hope that Ted’s conversations with Eddie will serve as a reminder for him about why he opted out of criminal law in the first place.

The Rest of the Show Is More Grounded

In contrast to its original counterpart, Suits LA, the spinoff show, has a distinct feel. While the primary characters from the original series don’t reprise their roles as main characters, one character does make an appearance. Moreover, unlike the original, which focused on corporate law, this version delves into entertainment law, providing opportunities for real-life celebrities to guest star and for plotlines involving fictional celebrities to be created.

When Ted isn’t interacting with Eddie, he’s either busy at his law office or experiencing a memory flashback. After criminal attorney Stuart Lane departed from his firm and took numerous employees and clients along, Ted had to quickly adapt to the situation. He continues to grapple with the aftermath as he takes on a murder case for actor Lester Thompson, who stands accused of killing his partner.

In the upcoming episodes, we’ll delve into Ted Black’s journey as he takes up Lester’s cases and grapples with his father’s passing. Additionally, Ted will find himself navigating through a new partnership with Erica and dealing with the loss of his friend Rick, who’s now working for Stuart Lane. Suits LA can be watched on NBC every Sunday at 9 p.m., or catch up on Peacock the following day.
