In the 2010s and early 2020s, video game adaptations were often seen as doomed to fail at the box office. However, recent years have seen a number of successful films based on popular games, such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog. Currently, Super Mario holds the title for highest-grossing video game movie ever, but fans speculate that this may soon change if A Minecraft Movie proves to be just as popular when it finishes its run in theaters.
With the success of the Minecraft film breaking records at the box office, enthusiasts are left pondering whether this blockbuster has what it takes to overtake Super Mario as the highest-earning video game movie ever made.
Minecraft vs. Mario
Based on information from Dexerto, the Minecraft film has surpassed $550 million in earnings, securing the position as the second highest-grossing video game movie ever. The title previously held by this position was Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which grossed a total of approximately $490 million worldwide.
Instead of reaching The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s global box office earnings of $1.36 billion, Minecraft needs to earn an additional $800 million to match it.
At present, it seems the movie is holding its ground even with negative critical reviews; however, I doubt that ‘Chicken Jockey’ memes alone will maintain audience engagement for such an extended period to push the film past the $1 billion threshold—though unexpected occurrences do happen in this industry, especially considering the puzzling success of Minecraft on the big screen.
They’re Kind of the Same Movie
By comparing Super Mario and Minecraft, it’s evident that these two media share many similarities in terms of their overall attraction.
The two video game movies are designed for children’s enjoyment, yet they also include numerous winks and nods for dedicated gamers. Both feature bearded protagonists transported to enchanting realms, where they must confront evil boss monsters that command legions of peculiar minions, aiming to dominate the magical lands.
Indeed, it’s worth mentioning that Jack Black performed an improvised song in not just Minecraft but also Super Mario as well.
From my gaming perspective, what sets Super Mario apart is its accessibility for beginners. It’s easy to jump in and start enjoying the game right away, without needing prior knowledge about the game world. On the other hand, Minecraft’s fun seems heavily reliant on players who are already acquainted with the Overworld, making it a bit more challenging for newcomers to fully appreciate its charm.
Who Will Come Out on Top?
To put it simply, Super Mario’s massive fanbase can be attributed to its enduring presence over time and the ability to captivate fans from one generation to the next.
Minecraft, primarily popular among millennials and Generation Z, has a structure that invites novice players daily, making it a strong contender for the largest game franchise spanning multiple generations. As Generation Alpha enters the scene, it’s likely some of them will discover Minecraft once they acquire smartphones (or any future dominant platform).
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but wonder: will Minecraft one day outshine Super Mario? Only time will tell. Until then, I’m excited to share that a Minecraft Movie is now playing in theaters! Remember, for the sake of everyone’s enjoyment, let’s keep our popcorn tossing to a minimum in the cinema.
