As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but ponder, now that the much-anticipated release of “Wuchang: Fallen Feathers” has set hearts racing and minds abuzz with early player reviews. One question that tickles my funny bone, in a playful manner, is this: Could it be that “Wuchang: Fallen Feathers” is merely a Dark Souls clone for gooners? The challenging gameplay and dark fantasy aesthetic certainly give off a similar vibe, but only time will tell if it has the same level of mastery and replayability.
It’s clear that this game, titled “Wuchang: Fallen Feathers“, has its unique take on being a Soulslike game, featuring a female protagonist prominently. Unlike other games in the genre, it distinguishes itself through the careful and purposeful design of clothing options.
As you traverse the remains of the Ming Dynasty, littered with corpses, you stumble upon cosmetic items and armor pieces adorned with intentional, sometimes provocative designs. In the game, Wuchang, the main character, can be customized to your preference, much like in other Soulslikes. However, the abundance of unlockable undergarments and revealing outfits is drawing a specific type of player who appreciates this style.
While Wuchang: Fallen Feathers isn’t primarily defined by it, it undeniably embodies the Soulslike genre. In terms of aesthetics, these elements serve as decorations, comparable to icing on a cake that scores an 8 out of 10. It’s worth noting that this phenomenon isn’t exclusive to Wuchang; even games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring from FromSoftware feature a variety of outfits that cater to different body types.
To put it another way, modifying (modding) a game such as Wuchang: Fallen Feathers could lead to an abundance of user-generated content, which may vary from amusingly odd to downright debatable.

Some people might contend that because Wuchang is consistently portrayed as a female protagonist, it allows for more explicit content to flourish. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t an uncommon approach in video games. For instance, Shift Up’s Stellar Blade also leans towards character designs that are appealing, but typically, these aspects aren’t the main focus unless you particularly appreciate such elements. In which case, yes, they certainly are.
In the world of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, much like Yoko Taro’s creation with NieR: Automata, my main character doesn’t require a backstory for her minimalist design. Clad in simple undergarments, she serves as an intriguing canvas for exploring deeper themes – in this case, the concepts of death and rebirth. It’s not about her appearance, but rather what lies beneath – the profound narrative that unfolds before us.
Reflecting on it now, Wuchang’s tale doesn’t necessarily have to center on the character of Wuchang. Another character could potentially carry the story just as effectively.
Perhaps Leenzee Games aimed to create a strong Souls-like game featuring a captivating female protagonist. However, is this detail significant in the grand scheme? Moreover, would fans of the genre (gooners) truly be concerned about it?
