Even though we’re still in April, I am quite certain that The Ballad Of Wallis Island will be hailed as one of the most enchanting films of 2025. It blends elements of drama and cynicism, but, as I mentioned in my four-star TopMob review, it carries a profound warmth that beautifully conveys the importance of closure. Interestingly enough, given my affinity for horror movies, I can’t help but notice that the fundamental structure of the plot bears striking resemblance to the opening act of a slasher film.
In this movie, a musician nearing the midpoint of his career (played by Tom Basden) gets hired by an eccentric millionaire (Tim Key) for a mysterious gig on a secluded island. However, certain crucial aspects of the job are omitted from the contract. These details eventually reveal that the musician is expected to perform for only one person and must reunite with his former bandmate from their defunct folk duo (Carey Mulligan). The storyline is subtly dramatic, and it could have veered into a much more ominous direction. In a recent interview, Key (who co-wrote the script with Basden) acknowledged this potential darkness. According to the actor/writer, the movie acknowledges that darkness as well.
In another way of putting it, the idea seems to have a potential to head in that particular direction. However, initially, that wasn’t the intended path, but considering its rough edges, it might come off as somewhat uncouth or unsettling. On a basic level, my character is portrayed as a villain, and it’s true, they are mercenaries, so everyone involved has questionable morals. That’s where we start, and then the challenge lies in how skillfully you craft the narrative and deliver the performance to change that perception.
During our interview at the top of this piece, I spoke with Tim Key, Tom Basden, Carey Mulligan, and director James Griffiths during a virtual press day for “The Ballad Of Wallis Island.” My initial query centered around how the film’s opening act could transform into a horror story with minor adjustments in tone. Although this doesn’t happen, Tim Key did admit that the characters aren’t entirely virtuous. Charles, played by Key, behaves dishonestly by not disclosing his plans to Basden’s Herb McGwyer, and Herb and Carey Mulligan’s Nell Mortimer may be compromising their principles by putting on a concert for an enormous payday.
In the movie “The Ballad Of Wallis Island,” given its compact narrative scope, the film’s mood largely hinges on the characters’ attitudes and perceptions. This was pointed out by Tim Key when I asked him about it. The characters in this story don’t fit neatly into typical hero and villain archetypes. Instead, they are all imperfect individuals who undergo significant personal development while sharing their time on Wallis Island. According to Key, this is a key aspect of the film.
The challenge lies in portraying this character effectively – you want to evoke empathy towards him, while also revealing his soft, caring side subtly. In your narrative, this depth isn’t immediately apparent, but gradually unfolds, allowing readers to understand each character’s unique background. Ideally, this approach fosters a sense of sympathy for the character, despite his somewhat irritating tendencies. You must navigate the struggle between these contrasting traits as well.
Charles is annoying, but it’s a lovable kind of annoying by which you can’t help but be charmed.
Additionally featuring Sian Clifford and Akemnji Ndifornyen, The Ballad Of Wallis Island is currently screening in theaters. If you’re seeking a film experience as comforting as wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket, it’s highly recommended that you watch it.
