‘It Felt A Little Hurtful’: Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet On Why His And Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Spinoff Series Didn’t Pan Out

As a devoted fan who grew up with “Modern Family” as a staple of my weekly television viewing, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and sadness every time I think about the missed opportunity for a spin-off centered around Mitchell and Cameron. The chemistry between Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson was electric, and their characters were undeniably some of the most beloved on the show.

Despite having finished its broadcast four years back, Modern Family somehow continues to seem like it should be included in the 2024 TV lineup. Given this sentiment, one might assume a spin-off focusing on one of the greatest sitcoms’ iconic characters – Mitchell and Cameron – would have been an effortless success. However, as Eric Stonestreet disclosed, such a venture was declined for particular reasons, which turned out to be rather disappointing.

In a recent conversation on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” the actor known for portraying Cam opened up about some deeply moving insights. Regardless of whether you’re an avid fan of the lengthy ABC sitcom, Stonestreet’s disclosure is quite poignant:

To be honest, I truly believed that the script Chris Lloyd and a few writers created, setting Jesse and me on an adventure in Missouri, had real potential. But alas, they turned it down, saying ‘No, we don’t wish to proceed.’ It was disappointing for Jesse, myself, and even Chris. I think it left us all feeling a little let down.

Eric Stonestreet expressed his belief that the idea could have been effective if executed immediately. However, for unknown reasons, a decision was made from higher ups that this approach wasn’t viable. Whether this choice aligns with common sense, given the context of Modern Family, is a matter of perspective – it could seem entirely plausible or utterly preposterous.

Looking back, it’s clear that the long-running comedy “Modern Family,” spanning over a decade with Cameron, Mitchell, and their extended family, has left an indelible mark on television. Even though we’ve only been a few years past its finale, actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons just attended her prom this year – she was mere four when the show first premiered! This bit of trivia might evoke nostalgia in fans for those good old days. To add to that, Eric Stonestreet, one of the actors, still holds the series in high esteem as you’ll discover in his subsequent statements.

I have a deep affection for my character, the series, and Jesse. Our professional bond was strong, and our on-screen chemistry was outstanding. Despite not knowing each other initially, we brought these characters to life, as crafted by Steve [Levitan], Chris, and our writing team. It seems that we still had some unfinished business… I believe Jesse and I felt a bit overlooked, as if our characters were considered too old or insignificant to continue developing further. This sentiment was somewhat disheartening.

It’s surprising that a spin-off centered around Cameron and Mitchell might not have been developed, given their grown children and the ongoing discussions about a possible revival of Modern Family. Here’s hoping if there is indeed a return to the show, they consider revisiting this spinoff as an apology to Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet.

Experience the charm of “Modern Family” once again, even though it’s no longer on TV, by streaming its 11 seasons! You can do this with a Hulu subscription, ensuring that these beloved characters remain within your reach. Who knows? By starting to watch now, you might discover some exciting updates as you progress through the series!
