‘It Follows’ Director David Robert Mitchell’s New Film Gets Delayed a Year

As a cinephile with a penchant for the bizarre and the brilliant, I eagerly await the upcoming projects from David Robert Mitchell. The delay of his IMAX “thrill ride” Flowervale Street is certainly disappointing, but if it means we get a more polished product, I’m all for it. And the prospect of Maika Monroe returning to her iconic role in They Follow is nothing short of exhilarating.

Fans eagerly anticipating writer-director David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming enigmatic movie, previously set for release in IMAX on May 16, 2025, will now have to hold their excitement until March 13, 2026, according to Bloody Disgusting. The film, currently titled Flowervale Street, has been postponed by nearly a year. Its initial release date has been reassigned to Final Destination: Bloodlines instead. No reason for the delay has been disclosed as of now.

Not much information is available about Flowervale Street. Some have likened it to an exhilarating rollercoaster ride, though its connection with dinosaurs remains uncertain. There are whispers that it’s set in the 1980s, and some theories suggest it ties into the Cloverfield universe. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella, and Christian Convery have been confirmed to be part of the cast. Additionally, Hannah Minghella from Bad Robot, Matt Jackson from Jackson Pictures, and Tommy Harper are also involved as producers.

Ever since the gripping thriller “Under the Silver Lake” in 2018, featuring stars like Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, and Topher Grace, I’ve been eagerly waiting for David Mitchell’s next move. Apart from “Flowervale Street,” there are two intriguing projects brewing on his horizon: “Evergreen Pines and the Fading Summer,” initially announced in 2023 and rumored to feature Jim Carrey, and “They Follow” – a long-awaited sequel to my horror masterpiece, “It Follows,” which promises the return of Maika Monroe as our beloved protagonist Jay Height.

Monroe Is Excited to Re-Team With Mitchell For ‘They Follow’

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming horror sequel, similar to the anticipation I felt for Flowervale Street. Unfortunately, the details surrounding this new project are being closely guarded at the moment, but during a chat with Collider back in June 2024, the lead actor Monroe shared some intriguing insights. He hinted that the sequel will be larger, darker, and more twisted than the original, making it an even more chilling experience for us fans!

She continued:

In the first film, David’s brilliance is undeniable. The movie underwent a significant transformation due to his involvement, pushing boundaries within its genre. David wouldn’t even consider making a sequel unless he believed it would surpass the original. He’s incredibly selective, turning down numerous opportunities. At first, I was skeptical about a sequel, but after reading the script, I was blown away. It’s fantastic! I can’t wait for you to see where Jay is at this point in the story. While it might not be what you expect, it’s incredibly cool… Reading the script was an incredible experience.

They Follow is expected to begin filming sometime in 2025.
