As a cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of modern horror cinema, I can confidently say that few films have left as lasting an impression on me as David Robert Mitchell’s “It Follows.” The 2014 masterpiece not only showcased the directorial prowess of Mitchell but also catapulted its relatively unknown cast members, including Daniel Zovatto, into stardom.
In the new Netflix movie titled “Woman of the Hour,” Daniel Zovatto portrays the chilling role of a serial killer named Rodney Alcala, as he preys upon unsuspecting women. This is quite a departure from his character in the film that catapulted him into Hollywood stardom a decade ago, “It Follows.” In “It Follows,” Zovatto played a different kind of killer, one who was stalked by an eerie and unseen entity that haunted its victim following intimate relations with the previous infected person. The entity represented a malevolent sexually transmitted disease, in essence. When speaking to MovieWeb about “Woman of the Hour,” Zovatto took a moment on the 10th anniversary of “It Follows” to reflect on that film.
I can’t express enough my deep appreciation for ‘It Follows,'” I gush. “It truly kick-started my career, and David Robert Mitchell is an exceptional filmmaker. Being a part of ‘It Follows’ was an incredible journey. I made some fantastic friends during that project. From the start, I knew it was going to be something special, and it really was.” I add enthusiastically:
“I saw his first movie, ‘The Myth of the American Sleepover,’ which I found impressive. However, when I watched ‘It Follows,’ something about David’s camera work with Mike Gioulakis, our cinematographer, and their overall approach really caught my attention. It was so unique that even though the film is 10 years old, it felt like they were creating something exceptional. It’s wonderful to hear that people still enjoy and value the movie. I can hardly believe it’s been a decade since it was released – that’s amazing!
Maika Monroe Hypes It Follows 2
Nearly a decade later, enthusiasts of “It Follows” received exciting news regarding a sequel, now known as “They Follow“. In June of this year, Maika Monroe shared an enthusiastic update about the film with Collider. “David is incredibly talented,” she said. “The entire movie underwent a transformation at that point. It was redefining the genre, and he wouldn’t make a sequel unless he thought it would surpass the original. He’s very particular,” Monroe explained, further adding:
“He has a clear vision of what he wants to accomplish, both in terms of action and creation. Initially, I found the idea of a sequel puzzling, wondering where the story could possibly go. However, upon reading it, I was blown away by its quality. It’s exceptional, and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. I believe that encountering Jay at this stage might not be as predictable as one might expect, but it’s incredibly intriguing. As many people say about sequels, it’s indeed larger in scale, more complex, and delves into darker, more disturbing themes. Reading it was an exhilarating experience.
Monroe expressed great enthusiasm about this role. “I’ve been eagerly looking forward to it for quite a while,” she said. “There’s so much potential in this project, and I anticipate it will be both demanding and incredibly rewarding. Working with David, I’m really looking forward to it.” We can certainly understand why!
