In a more casual and straightforward manner: Everyone seems to have an interesting story about Tom Cruise, but his co-star Hayley Atwell from “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” might just have the most embarrassing recollection of when they were getting acquainted on the set of the 2023 film, “Dead Reckoning”.
During a chat on Sirius XM prior to Mission: Impossible 8 being slated for a 2025 release, Atwell (who might be involved in Avengers: Doomsday) shared a tale from the set of her upcoming 2023 action-thriller. On this particular movie night, she and her French bulldogs watched Shane and other films to foster camaraderie with her co-star. To Atwell’s astonishment, her dogs took an instant liking to Cruise – perhaps a bit too much so, as she reminisced: “They seemed to bond with Tom almost immediately, which was both endearing and a little overwhelming!
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I firmly believe that a character’s authenticity shines brightly when animals, devoid of societal niceties, are instinctively drawn to them. It’s an unfiltered, immediate connection, one that was evident in this film as the characters seemed to adore him deeply. In fact, his charm was so potent that French Bulldogs, known for their stubbornness, repeatedly insisted on perching on him throughout the movie. This is a testament to the charisma of the character, making me appreciate the performance even more.
For those who own dogs or have spent considerable time around them, it’s common knowledge that these furry friends can occasionally emit flatulence that is incredibly foul, unpleasant, and powerfully scented, ranking among the worst in the animal world. As the movie progressed, Atwell found that her pets were treating the renowned Hollywood star as their personal windbreaker.
However, let me clarify. Whilst Atwell found herself mortified due to her French bulldogs emitting unpleasant and presumably meaty odors, Cruise remained oblivious to this situation until she informed him in what could be considered one of the most awkward ways possible.
Tom, who was completely clueless yet always polite, wouldn’t comment on anything throughout the movie. Towards the end, I found myself turning to him and, unable to say “passing wind,” I instead said in a cowboy accent, “Pardon my gas,” to which he reacted with confusion, also seeming puzzled about the sudden change in my tone of voice. It was quite strange what emerged from my mouth, and it felt more awkward than the dogs’ farts.
Initially, I find myself cringing so hard at this tale, as if I were the one in the spotlight, yet it’s not my story to tell. Secondly, I must admit, that accent is perplexing! If you haven’t already, revisit the linked clip above. Perhaps they were captivated by one of the most iconic Western films ever made, or maybe it was just a peculiar coincidence.
Despite the unusual incident with the famous actor not enhancing Atwell’s dogs’ reputation as the most distinguished pets in Hollywood lore, it certainly provided an amusing anecdote to remember for years to come – and fortunately, this time he didn’t have to worry about losing his socks.
Everything appeared to fall into place, with Atwell not only wrapping up her role in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, but also securing a significant part in The Final Reckoning, which continues to play on screens across the country.
