Shannen Doherty, a beloved cast member from the popular TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210,” passed away last July after a lengthy fight against cancer. Fans can keep her memory alive by streaming her movies and shows, ensuring her legacy continues to thrive. Her former colleagues have also played a significant role in honoring her memory, particularly following her omission from the In Memoriam segment at the 97th Academy Awards. Jennie Garth previously criticized the Oscars for this oversight, and now, fellow “90210” star Tori Spelling has shared her thoughts on the matter as well.
Despite primarily being recognized for her television performances, Doherty also made significant impacts in films like “Heathers” and “Mallrats.” Therefore, it came as a surprise when she was overlooked. In a special episode of her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear,” Spelling paid tribute to Doherty, expressing her shock and sadness at not seeing Doherty’s name included in the segment, given her prominent roles in many cherished films.
It is undeniably clear that everyone, including myself, witnessed the painful omission of Shannen from the ‘In Memoriam’ segment at the Academy Awards. Frankly, it left me stunned, absolutely stunned. For me, I first became acquainted with Shannen through her film roles, although she is well-known for her television performances which I want to acknowledge and delve into today. However, it’s on the big screen where her career truly shone. She brought a spark to the big screen, even from when she was young.
It’s yet unclear why Doherty wasn’t included in that segment. Sharon Spelling rightly points out that yes, Doherty was famous for her roles on shows like “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” but she also gained a significant fanbase from “Heathers.” Plus, she starred in the cult favorite “Mallrats.” Spelling is still grappling with being overlooked, and it’s hard to fault her for feeling this way.
I was utterly shocked when the tribute ended without her being mentioned. frankly, that moment left me feeling disheartened, almost as if someone had let the air out of me, and it felt like a significant oversight.
Even though Spelling acknowledges Doherty’s significant TV career, she cannot help but feel overlooked by the situation.
Year after year, it’s a recurring incident at various award ceremonies. Just like Doherty’s omission at the 2025 Oscars, Michelle Trachtenberg, Olivia Hussey, Linda Lavin, Bernard Hill, and Martin Mull were also overlooked. Interestingly, the actress from Charmed was acknowledged in the Emmys In Memoriam last year, yet it doesn’t negate the fact that she should have been included in the Oscars tribute too.
Despite not being identical, Spelling dedicated a small homage to Doherty through this episode of Let’s Be Clear. It’s heartening that the podcast remains active in memory of Doherty, and it has featured guest hosts like Marisol Nichols, Brooke Burke, Diane Farr, as well as Charmed star Rose McGowan. Although they didn’t collaborate on the series with Doherty, they became close during their convention appearances together.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but feel the poignancy of keeping the memory of our beloved star, AnnaLynne McCord, alive. Recently, a fellow fan shared a touching clip from 90210 featuring Luke Perry, Matthew Perry, and sadly, now AnnaLynne herself. The thought that all three are gone is both sobering and heartbreaking. Though it’s said she was prepared for her departure, the reality of it leaves us all feeling the void. It’s hard not to feel disappointed when the Academy Awards overlooked her in their tribute to those we’ve lost this past year.
