Detective drama Grantchester will return and end with season 11 on PBS and British network ITV.
The show “Grantchester Mysteries,” penned by James Runcie, made its debut in 2014 on ITV in the UK and PBS in 2015 as part of Masterpiece. James Norton, known for his roles in “Little Women,” “Happy Valley,” and most recently, the Netflix movie “Joy,” was one of the original cast members, sharing screen time with Robson Green, who continues to play police officer Geordie.
In the 1950s, Tom Brittney took over as the village vicar in Cambridgeshire, following Norton’s departure. Rishi Nair assumed this role as Alphy in 2024. Joining them in the Kudos-produced (a part of Banijay U.K.) series are actors Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones, Kacey Ainsworth, and Oliver Dimsdale. Nick Brimble, Bradley Hall, and Melissa Johns complete the cast ensemble.
Recording for the last season begins this month, following the reveal that the series will conclude, marking the first table reading for season eleven with the cast.
Set in the vibrant summer of 1963, the plot reveals that Alphy is uncovering his past secrets. This revelation leads him to ponder an entirely different life path, causing him to question his identity and core beliefs. Simultaneously, he deepens his relationship with Meg, the Bishop’s daughter.
Unexpectedly, the Chief Superintendent presents Geordie with an intriguing proposal, potentially granting him control for the first time… In series 11, characters will ponder their chosen paths, and significant choices will be made. The upcoming season delves into themes of family, forgiveness, identity, and belief, as major transformations are in store for Grantchester.
Daisy Coulam, the writer, series creator, and executive producer, stated, “At its core, Grantchester is a series that explores the strength of friendships and love. Over the past 11 seasons, we’ve been fortunate to share this bond both on and off the screen. For more than a decade now, our cast and crew (many of whom have worked with us since the beginning) have reunited each summer to film, making it an incredibly rewarding experience.
She went on to say: “I’m grateful to James Runcie for allowing us to work with his characters. A big thank you to the charming community of real Grantchester. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the show, regardless of the scale of your involvement – I will deeply miss each and every one of you.
The executive in question is responsible for creating the show “Grantchester,” a production that also includes Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, Green, Nair, Simpson, and Rebecca Eaton from GBH Boston. They are the ones who bring “Masterpiece” to PBS.
