As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through dark forests and over burning bridges in virtual worlds, I can truly appreciate the depth and emotion that Ivan Seriy’s “In Search of Light” exhibition at Moosey Art Norwich evokes. The journey of the nameless boy and his cat friend mirrors my own experiences in gaming, facing unexpected challenges and seeking that elusive light in the darkness.
Moosey Art in Norwich, UK unveiled the new solo exhibition by Ivan Seriy titled “In Search of Light“. With influences from his graffiti background, Seriy breathes life into his fanciful characters on canvas, providing a thought-provoking perspective on contemporary contradictions through an impressive display of oil paintings.
The exhibit tells the tale of an unnamed lad and his feline companion, who embark on a trek through a mysterious woodland, in pursuit (as hinted by the title) of light. Each piece exudes the thrill of novelty as the duo encounter unexpected hurdles throughout their journey.
These works are richly personal, infusing them with emotional depth. They also possess a 3D-like realism that makes them feel almost tangible. Light in these pieces can symbolize hope or serve as a warning of vulnerability and danger. For instance, the gentle radiance of a lunar rainbow or the sparkle in the characters’ large, round eyes might represent hope. Conversely, light could also hint at moments of exposure and peril. The intense gaze of “Big Brother” evokes feelings of being watched, while the ominous blackness of “The Sea of Tears” suggests a looming emptiness or danger.
The main piece, “Burning Bridge,” portrays a boy running over a scorched bridge, symbolizing the start of a journey and the decisive act of leaving something behind. This theme encapsulates a harsh reality that permeates the show: the road ahead is seldom clear-cut, and when it is, it’s on fire. A different interpretation of In Search of Light suggests that in times when the world seems shrouded in darkness, even the tiniest sparks of light can serve as a compass to navigate.
