I’ve Always Had One Big Gripe About The I Know What You Did Last Summer Villain, And The New Movie’s Director Made The Change I Needed

In the lineup of upcoming horror flicks perfect for blockbuster season is the latest addition to the I Know What You Did Last Summer series. At Sony Pictures, TopMob had a chance to listen in on a discussion between the film’s new team and cast, where director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (who’s also a fan of the franchise) shared an exciting alteration she made. This change revolves around the franchise’s renowned villain, and as a fellow enthusiast, I can’t wait to see it unfold!

I Know What You Did Last Summer’s Director Shares A Gripe I Have With The Original Movies

The newly appointed director for “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, in collaboration with Sam Lansky, penned the screenplay. As anticipated, they engaged in numerous discussions about the plotline. Notably, they had a passionate disagreement regarding Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character during the creation of Julie James for the horror franchise. Interestingly, Robinson made an intriguing choice concerning the Fisherman’s costume alteration. In her own words:

The movie is a new release, set in modern times. I decided to refresh the costume design, so the slicker is now different. Additionally, I felt that the original character needed more refinement – nothing against the original portrayal, she’s wonderful, but we wanted her to be more polished this time around.

In my opinion, it’s long overdue that someone voices this! Whenever I revisit the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” I can’t help but feel that the slasher villain’s hook doesn’t seem very intimidating. It appears that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson shared my concerns and aimed to revamp the horror experience for contemporary audiences. To address this problem in a fresh installment, a straightforward solution could prove effective: give the hook a significant upgrade to significantly enhance the film’s impact.

What’s The Change That Was Made To The Fisherman For The New Movie?

As soon as the initial trailer for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was released, fans immediately noticed that the Fisherman had a fresh tool in his arsenal. In this latest installment, the ruthless antagonist employs a harpoon gun to surprise one of his unfortunate victims. Notably, the iconic hook is still part of his deadly setup; at the Sony Pictures event, Robinson discussed the modifications she made to it.

Essentially, I said, “Alright, it could have been better. But it could have been much worse, too.” So we took steps to improve it. This time around, I wanted it to stand out and be unique. That’s why we revised the introduction and added depth to it, making the hook not just a sharp point but a blade with an edge as well. In other words, we made it more menacing. It’s quite intense now.

It seems that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has effectively brought a chilling intensity to her slasher villain, while still preserving his core identity. This enhancement undeniably makes him more terrifying, and the latest trailer (which you can check out below) provides a tantalizing glimpse of the devastation the fisherman is capable of inflicting.

Approximately two decades have passed since the last installment of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” graced our screens, making it ripe for a comeback. A new filmmaker has taken up the challenge to elevate this franchise. The movie focuses on a fresh group of young characters residing in Southport – Jonah Hauer-King, Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, and Tyriq Withers – who are involved in an unfortunate car accident that claims the life of a pedestrian. To conceal their involvement, they make a desperate attempt at covering it up. However, their misdeeds come back to haunt them when they start receiving eerie messages and encounter the return of the Fisherman one year later.

In times of need, this band of companions seeks out the characters Ray Bronson, portrayed by Freddie Prinze Jr., and Julie, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. Remarkably enough, these two are indeed still alive in the storyline. I find the trailer’s resemblance to the original quite captivating.

The movie appears to be remaining faithful to the original series, and it’s fantastic that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson made the choice to incorporate the hook element. Here’s hoping this decision elevates the film’s tension slightly. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to premiere in cinemas on July 18 as part of the 2025 movie lineup.
