As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement over Dave Chappelle gracing Studio 8H for the fourth time as host of Saturday Night Live. True to form, he didn’t shy away from expressing his thoughts during his opening monologue. In an approximately seventeen-minute set that was both uproariously funny and thoughtfully profound, Chappelle tackled a range of topics – from the Los Angeles fires, the potential return of Donald Trump, Jimmy Carter, Haitian immigrants, and most notably, Diddy. Boy, did he go deep on Diddy!
In his stand-up routine, Chappelle spent approximately five minutes delving into the intricacies of the Diddy predicament and the extent of his current predicament. He expressed that he’s had his fair share of scandals and run-ins with trouble in the past, but nothing has ever resembled the complexity of the Diddy case as he puts it. Here’s an excerpt from his statement…
In the past, I’ve found myself in some difficult situations. However, let me share something with you – there’s a fellow named Puffy who seems to be in an unprecedented amount of trouble. Honestly, I can’t remember encountering anything quite like his predicament. As it stands, he’s the sole defendant in a RICO case.
In classic Chappelle style, he unexpectedly changed course and humorously implied that he assumed he wasn’t invited to those wild parties because he must not be deemed attractive. He expressed confusion about the situation, stating that discovering Hollywood elites were hosting secret orgies without him was a painful revelation. He described it as a hard lesson in learning that people don’t find him appealing. The full quote can be found below…
Many of my friends often question me, they say things like, “Dave, weren’t you aware of those wild parties?” To which I usually respond, “No, not a clue about the wild parties.” They give me a doubtful look. Then, they ask, “Why is it that all the people you know are attending these wild parties and you’re the only one who wasn’t there?” After some thought, I jokingly remarked, “I guess I must be ugly.” That was quite a blow to my ego. Imagine if you were in my shoes, reading a newspaper and discovering everyone in Hollywood had an orgy without inviting me. None of you called me. It really stings.
Later on, Chappelle emphasized that it was Reginald VelJohnson, known for playing Carl Winslow in Family Matters, who was accused of attending parties, not him. Despite VelJohnson’s denial and his significant role in Die Hard, Chappelle found himself struggling with the idea that VelJohnson could have been invited to an orgy and not him. He confessed that this thought made him question if it was really about good looks, and instead, he mused that perhaps his face gives off a “snitch vibe.
Check out the amusing monologue further down. The Diddy part is roughly between 9:00 and 14:00, featuring a side-splitting segment towards the end where he discusses his stance on allowing people to mature and learn from their errors as they age. However, if you’re 55 and have a thousand bottles of baby oil, it seems like you “can’t break the habit, won’t quit.
In Chappelle’s monologue, it wasn’t just laughter that filled the room. As a fan, I was moved by his heartfelt tribute to Jimmy Carter. While opinions may vary about Carter’s presidency, I found myself tears welling up when he showed a picture of the former President walking through Palestine with minimal security, surrounded by throngs of people. He acknowledged Carter as a good man who did his best and ended with some insightful reflections on the incoming President Trump.
Chappelle was careful in choosing his words and aimed at uniting people. Thus, I’ll allow his own words to express their impact…
Donald Trump, it seems you’re tuned into the program. Just a thought: Regardless of who cast their votes for you, they all anticipate your leadership. Whether they admire you or not, they expect you to deliver. The entire globe is looking up to you. I sincerely say this, ‘Good luck.’ Let’s strive for improvement next time around. I implore us all to remember our shared humanity and show compassion towards displaced individuals, whether they reside in the Palisades or Palestine.
Next Saturday, “Saturday Night Live” will air a fresh episode featuring returning host Timothée Chalamet from “The Complete Unknown.” This marks his third time hosting, and with past performances being exceptional, this episode promises to deliver another fantastic night of entertainment!
