On the anniversary special, Adam Sandler sang a tune honoring Saturday Night Live’s 50 years on television, with Jack Nicholson, a former Hollywood legend, introducing him prior to the performance.
Nicolson preceded his comedic performance by acknowledging the renowned actor from “Grown Ups” beforehand. During this introduction, he reminisced about memorable moments on Saturday Night Live (SNL), speculated when Lorne Michaels might retire, and humorously commented about discovering that a favorite musician harbors anti-Semitic views.
Sandler commenced his act remarking that “everyone here shares something unique,” emphasizing that “we all had our lives impacted by this show.” He playfully mocked certain amusing instances, then pondered in his lyrics who would succeed Lorne when he retires. There was a hint of humor as he seemed to suggest that Speedy Rosenthal, a longtime member of SNL’s music team, might be the one to replace Michael.
It seems like the comedian and actor, while performing, took a subtle dig at Kanye West, who has made seven appearances on the show. Sandler sang, “50 years of discovering your favorite musician holds antisemitic views.” Later, he playfully taunted former cast members about harboring resentment over not getting enough screen time, implying they were filled with ill-will.
Toward the end of the song, Sandler acknowledged and showed appreciation for the original SNL cast, often referred to as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. He then highlighted some of the show’s most remarkable performers, stating that they spent four years with Eddie Murphy, eight years with Will Forte, five years with both Jan Hooks and Gilda Radner, six years with Victoria Jackson, 11 years with [Michael] Che, three years with Melanie Hutsell, and Michael McKean excelled in two. As the song came to a close, he paid tribute to the late Chris Farley and Norm Macdonald.
He crooned, “Fifty years of one of us having the privilege to declare, ‘Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night,'” prior to wrapping up the amusing and emotional presentation. “Fifty years of the most cherished moments of our existence.
Previously in the evening, Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon teamed up for a rendition of “Homeward Bound” by Simon & Garfunkel. Later, this was followed by Steven Martin’s introduction to the night’s events. As the evening progressed, Carpenter returned to perform in an updated version of SNL’s popular Domingo skit, featuring music from her song “Espresso.
During the three-hour special broadcast, a multitude of past guests graced the Saturday Night Live stage once more. Notable members of the Five-Timers Club, such as Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Simon, Martin Short, and Woody Harrelson, made an appearance. Furthermore, other famous faces like Adam Driver, Ayo Edebiri, Bad Bunny, Dave Chappelle, John Mulaney, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Pedro Pascal, Peyton Manning, Quinta Brunson, Robert De Niro, and Sabrina Carpenter also joined the festivities.
On Sunday mornings, it was revealed by NBC that Alec Baldwin, Cher, Billy Crystal, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Leslie Jones, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mike Myers, Rev. Al Sharpton and Miles Teller would be added to the impressive roster of stars.
Approximately two dozen actors who have been or are currently part of Saturday Night Live’s cast appeared in the special. This group included Sandler, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Fred Armisen, Pete Davidson, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kate McKinnon, Seth Meyers, Tracy Morgan, Eddie Murphy, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Molly Shannon, Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Wiig, and Kenan Thompson, who holds the record for being SNL’s longest-running performer.
Prior to the live event, Peacock debuted a four-part series documenting the history of Saturday Night Live (SNL), and on Valentine’s Day they hosted a live concert special featuring popular musical acts that have appeared on SNL. NBC broadcasted a documentary about SNL’s music, which can now be streamed on Peacock.
