As a movie buff who has seen more than my fair share of stunts, both on-screen and off, I must say that Steve-O’s story is one for the books. His encounter with a transgender supermarket cashier was indeed a sign from the universe, guiding him away from a potentially harmful and insensitive stunt.
In the realm of daring stunts, many spectators assume there’s no way to halt such risky, frequently reckless, and typically foolish antics. Yet, it appears that one specific stunt was called off, all thanks to the star’s unexpected meeting with a transgender cashier at a supermarket the day prior to his planned breast implant surgery, which he intended for comedic purposes.
In a conversation with Consequence of Sound, Steve-O shared that all arrangements were set for the questionable action, yet a divine signal from the universe prompted him to reconsider following a chat with the cashier. Put simply, he decided not to proceed after this encounter.
The day of my scheduled surgery arrived, but instead, I found myself at the checkout in a supermarket. The cashier, who appeared to be transgender, seemed like a divine message to me. So, I approached them and engaged in a conversation that left a deep impression on me. I hadn’t previously had many conversations or meetings with trans individuals because I didn’t feel it was necessary.
Just having that one conversation changed his mind completely, even though he went on note that while testing out the material, several trans people did support the stunt for its comedic potential and had not seen it as being in any way malicious or hurtful. He added:
In simpler terms, “I knew why I did what I did, and I didn’t intend to cause harm to anyone. I was merely trying to be funny. I had performed several test shows to try out new material, and some transgender individuals expressed their support for the stunt. I believe that people would have had varying reactions – some might have accepted it, while others wouldn’t.
Steve-O’s Original Plans for His Enhanced Performance
After getting breast implants as part of his stunt, Steve-O was eager to reveal his post-surgery plans. He was open about the outrageous antics he intended to perform for laughter – and potentially a slap in the face – during the production of the series.
I’d sneakily tour the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on a pink Vespa while wearing a disguise, making it impossible for anyone to recognize me. My intention was to secretly record videos as I approached large groups of motorcyclists, who would likely take notice. Then, I’d remove my helmet and say, “Yeah, dude,” eliciting an unexpected, possibly contentious reaction.
After the plans got cancelled, Steve-O admitted he had one remorse regarding the entire event not taking place – primarily because he had talked himself up about it so much beforehand.
Reflecting on that past event, I can’t help but feel profound gratitude that it didn’t transpire. It’s a relief beyond measure that I didn’t proceed with my initial intentions. However, the ease of this realization didn’t lessen the struggle I experienced at the time, as I had been so open about my plans and have always prided myself on being an artist who follows through on commitments. Honoring my word was what I found most challenging during that period.
