Jaden Smith’s film debuts on a fresh streaming service, coinciding with the release of “Karate Kid: Legends” in cinemas. The 2010 version of “The Karate Kid” can currently be streamed for free on…
2010’s martial arts drama “The Karate Kid,” directed by Harald Zwart, served as the fifth installment in the franchise. This movie stars Jaden Smith and Taraji P. Henson, with the story focusing on 12-year-old Dre Parker (Smith), a boy from Detroit who moves to Beijing, China with his mother Sherry (Henson). In Beijing, Dre forms an alliance with kung-fu master Mr. Han (Chan) to deal with a local bully. This film is a reimagining of the 1984 original, although it was initially intended for a different narrative continuity.
Stepping into the spotlight once more, I find myself reviewing the eagerly anticipated “Karate Kid: Legends.” In this fresh instalment, the legendary Mr. Han, portrayed by none other than Jackie Chan, and Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio, reunite on screen. This time around, however, the 2010 version of “The Karate Kid” has been reimagined, seamlessly integrating it into the same fictional universe as the original series. To add an exciting twist to the storyline, a host of new characters are also introduced, promising a captivating blend of old and new for fans to enjoy!
Jaden Smith’s short stint as The Karate Kid was warmly received by both fans and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie earned a favorable 67% rating, with many praising it as a surprisingly effective modern take on the 80s original. By shifting the fighting style to kung fu instead of karate, the film managed to feel contemporary and engaging for viewers like Jaden Smith.
Over its initial weekend at the cinema, “The Karate Kid” took the lead on the box office charts. By the time it wrapped up its showing, the movie had amassed a staggering global revenue of over $359 million – quite an achievement given its relatively low production cost of $40 million.
Karate Kid’s New Director Confirms Jaden Smith’s Place in the Film Franchise
In the latest Karate Kid movie released in theaters, the narrative has been adjusted, causing a shift from Jaden Smith’s previous film. However, some characters from earlier installments made a comeback – unfortunately, Jaden Smith did not reprise his role. Despite this, the director of the new film, Jonathan Entwistle, has indicated that the Karate Kid universe remains connected, particularly after the recent movie slightly altered the storyline of Smith’s film. He explained, “The character [Jaden Smith] still belongs to the canon, but he bears no direct relation to Li Fong [the protagonist from Karate Kid: Legends].
In “Karate Kid: Legends,” Chan and Macchio return to their roles, with Ben Wang joining the cast as Li Fong, a young Chinese boy mentored by his elderly uncle, Mr. Han. The movie finds Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso teaming up to teach Li Fong their distinctive fighting techniques. The film premiered on May 30.
2010’s The Karate Kid is now streaming for free on Tubi.
